VFW Post 8874 Commander Roger Anaya and Morrie Pongratz at last night’s event at Duane Smith Auditorium announced the winner of the Los Alamos VFW’s Post 8874 Voice of Democracy award. Since 1947, the Voice of Democracy has been the Veterans of Foreign Wars’ (VFW’s) premier scholarship program. Each year, almost 40,000 high school students compete for more than $2 million in scholarships and incentives. Students compete by writing and recording an audio essay on an annual patriotic theme. Atomic City Children’s Theater (ACCT), Los Alamos Public Schools’ award winning after-school musical theater program announced their events and shows for the 2016-17 season.
ACCT Summer Workshops
ACCT’s jam-packed season begins in August with the return of their popular ACCT Summer Workshops. The Summer Workshops are 9-11 a.m., Aug. 1-5 in two locations at the high school. The Dance, Acting and Music workshops are in the Topper Theater Monday-Wednesday. The workshops will then move to Smith Auditorium Thursday-Friday for the Stagecraft/Prop and Makeup workshops. Wilbur Wang of Los Alamos High School, a Level 4 gold medal in the National German Exams, has been awarded an all‐expense‐paid summer study trip to Germany.
He was selected as a national winner after scoring in the 96th percentile on the Level 4 2016 National German Exam.

The Los Alamos Master Gardeners invites the community to their Demonstration Garden Fair, 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, June 11.
Children are invited to come and participate in the activities especially for them. For a Butterfly Hunt, children will be given a list of questions. Each of the butterflies, scattered throughout the garden, answers one of the questions. A second activity will be seed planting in cups that the child will take home. Every child is a winner with prizes for participating.

The Los Alamos Garden Club has chosen Los Alamos High School senior Talia Dreicer as the winner of the 2016 scholarship award. The award will be presented at the Honors Convocation May 24.

Chamisa Hosts Reunion For Graduating Seniors

What better way to celebrate National Trails Day than to hike? Local trail expert Craig Martin is leading a hike 10:15 a.m. Saturday, June 4, up Water Canyon to the meadow, where hikers can enjoy running water, flowers, and interesting trail stories.
This free hike is great for kids with a bit of hiking experience. The hike is about two miles round trip with around 400 feet of elevation gain.
