Friends Of Los Alamos County Libraries Seeks Scholarship Applicants

SCHOLARSHIP News:
The Friends of Los Alamos County Libraries will award up to four $2,500 scholarships again this year and also will administer the $2,500 June Ettinger Memorial Scholarship.
Any senior in good standing, who is enrolled at Los Alamos High School or in an approved home school program in Los Alamos County and plans to continue his or her education at a recognized institution by September of the year following graduation, may apply for the Friends’ scholarships.

Join hike leader Jan Studebaker on a fun snowshoe outing at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 14.

The trip, organized by PEEC, is free to attend and open to all ages who are up for the 3-4 hour hike.

The Cerro Grande route winds its way up to the highest point in Bandelier with Cerro Grande Peak at 10,199 ft. The route is marked by yellow diamonds and is 2.3 miles each way (4.6 round trip) and is expected to take 3-4 hours. Fifth grade students at Mountain Elementary School last Wednesday got to experience snowshoeing at Camp May. 

Led by their PE Teacher, Tony Hinojosa, the Mountain School Specials Team (Art, Music, Library, PE) all worked together to give their 5th grade students the opportunity to explore the beauty of Camp May, while learning how to utilize snowshoes and search for signs of wildlife.

Griffith Gymnasium Mural Contest Announced

LAPSF News:

Los Alamos Public Schools Foundation announces a call for original artwork that represents the Hilltopper Spirit.

The mural contest is open to all Los Alamos Public School students in grades 8-12. This mural is to honor the creativity and memory of Isaac Hayden. Hayden’s family and friends, the LAHS Class of 1994 and LAPS Foundation have contributed to the project.

The winning submission will be painted in the interior of Griffith Gymnasium by a professional mural team. The finished size of the mural will be approximately 12’ high x 18’ wide and will adorn the east wall of the gym.

Pinon Elementary School is hosting its annual fun run at 9 a.m., March 21. The St. Patrick’s-themed event supports the school’s Parent Teacher Organization (PTO).

The 1-mile and 5K event kicks off with runners and joggers getting warmed up with a leprechaun. Snacks and prizes will be given after participants cross the finish line.

A native of Los Alamos, Dr. Steinhaus brings a wealth of experience to the position. He started his education career as a classroom teacher where he taught for 11 years.
