Buy A Book / Add To The Stacks At Los Alamos Middle School’s Annual Book Fair This Week

As the first librarian of the new Los Alamos Middle School building, Lisa Laprairie-Whitacre takes her collection quite seriously and any chance to add to the collection is a bonus.

The community is invited to shop the school book fair and help add to the stacks, which will benefit students year after year. The hours for the book fair are 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday this week, with special extended hours 4:30-7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

LAPS Food Service Manager Wins Award

Ian Tillotson of Summit Foods can add award winner to the menu as he rocks the school cafeteria each day.

The Los Alamos Public Schools food service manager served up a meal for Thanksgiving prior to the break, but he is the one who is thankful.

“I received the Client Recognition Award for exceptional service,” Tillotson said.

This was his second award in just three years with Summit Foods in Los Alamos. He was thankful because that award comes directly from a client. The company uses nominations and surveys sent to all 260 accounts to determine the recipients of the award. Read More

Udall, Heinrich Announce More Than $400,000 For Navajo Distance Learning

U.S. SENATE News:

WASHINGTON, D.C.U.S. Senators Tom Udall and Martin Heinrich announced $447,748 in funding for a distance learning initiative for the Navajo Technical University in Crownpoint, N.M. 

This funding, made possible through the Department of Agriculture’s Distance Learning and Telemedicine program, is intended to counteract high unemployment and poverty in the Navajo community. Michelle Groves’ beginning photography students at Los Alamos High School will host a photography art show Dec. 1-8 in the main lobby at the high school.

A special art opening is 7-9 p.m., Dec 3. The work of more than 50 students will be on display and light snacks and refreshments will be served. The students are part of her Beginning Photography class. They have been working hard this semester to put together this collection of work.

LAHS Participating In American Mathematics Competition

Los Alamos High School will be participating in the American Mathematics Competition exams Tuesday, Feb. 3 (“A” exam) and Wednesday, Feb. 25 (“B” exam).

Interested high school students need to sign up for one or both exams in the Math Office, Room A212. A $5 fee is due at sign up, which begins now and goes through Thursday, Dec. 11.

LAPS Cancellation/Delayed And Start/Early Dismissal

As fall turns to winter, we can anticipate some days when the weather will be a challenge because of ice or snow. There will be days that we either cancel school for the entire day or delay the start of the school day by two hours.

The decision about the status of the school day must be made by 5:30 a.m. so everyone who needs to be notified can get information in a timely manner.

Mountain Elementary School first grade student, Savanna Strother, second from left, was a winner of ‘Pop Star for the Day’ Nov. 14.
