One day in 1917, a dozen women gathered in front of the White House to stage a silent protest for women’s right to vote.

Spectators yelled at them, kicked them, and spit on them. They ripped the banners from their hands and threw them onto the ground.

Undaunted, these women brought those tattered banners back to a house across town. They cleaned them — sometimes carefully re-stitching Read More

Letter To The Editor: Kudos To Susan O’Leary

By GEORGE CHANDLER
Los Alamos

I want to commend Council Vice Chair Susan O’Leary for her courageous Open Letter to the Council published in the March 28 edition of the Los Alamos Daily Post. I spent eight years in that weird little universe she’s trying to navigate and I can tell from her letter that it hasn’t changed much. A lot of staff time goes into trying to give the Council the illusion of being in control while making sure they never get too close to the real levers of power. Susan is obviously getting too close.

What happens next is the freeze-out. There will be some councilors who buy the Read More

By Sen. HOWIE MORALES
D-28-Catron, Grant & Socorro

It is no exaggeration to say that the most vulnerable citizens in New Mexico, as in the broader society, are largely invisible and rarely heard. Among these are the elderly and the ill, children from broken homes in the juvenile detention system, and desperate people struggling with severe mental illness and behavioral problems. When such individuals are being abused and neglected, we must, as citizens, extend compassion, and as public officials, act swiftly.

A new report assembled by staff of the New Mexico Legislative Finance Read More

Sheehey: Why I’m Running For Re-Election

By PETE SHEEHEY
Democratic Candidate
Los Alamos County Council

It’s been an honor to serve on County Council since I was elected four years ago. Here’s why I am asking the people of Los Alamos to re-elect me to a second term.

This is my 30th year in this town, where I have lived and worked as a physicist at Los Alamos National Laboratory, first a single person, then married with a family, and now as a retired person. Personally, I’ve lived a lot of the American dream here: stimulating work with good pay in a beautiful environment. The town and Lab have gone through some ups and downs in those 30 years, Read More
