The Water Quality Control Commission (“WQCC”) will hold a public hearing for this matter to begin May 13, 2025, following the WQCC’s regularly scheduled meeting, which starts at 9 a.m., and continuing thereafter as necessary.

Daily Postcard: A turkey vulture warms its wings in Bandelier National Monument. Bandelier’s Frijoles Canyon has one of the largest turkey vulture roosts in New Mexico. From March through mid-September there are often 50 -60 vultures roosting in the main area of Frijoles Canyon near the visitor center. In the past, even greater numbers used the large cottonwoods located there. In the morning, vultures can be seen sunning themselves on the canyon slopes until the air warms and provides thermal updrafts to begin their days of soaring and feeding. SANTA FE — Friday, the House of Representatives passed key legislation to help facilitate transition to clean energy and protect New Mexicans from toxic chemicals.
House Bill 361, which passed unanimously, would help clean up and repurpose depleted oil and gas wells across New Mexico. The bill would authorize the Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources Department (EMNRD) to utilize these wells for energy storage or geothermal energy development. SANTA FE—The New Mexico Environment Department’s (NMED) Occupational Health and Safety Bureau yesterday submitted a petition to the state’s Environmental Improvement Board to adopt a proposed rule on occupational heat illness and injury prevention.

Santa Fe National Forest Rescinds Medio Fire Closure Order And Reopens Access To Popular Trails
SANTA FE — The Santa Fe National Forest (SFNF) rescinded the Medio Fire closure order, effective 8 a.m. Friday, March 14, 2025.
The closure area included all Forest Service lands, roads, and trails within an area that is roughly defined by Rio Nambe Trail #160 on the north, Borrego Trail #150 and Forest Road 412 on the east, Forest Road 102 on the south, and back up the forest boundary line on the west to meet Rio Nambe Trail #160.

County: Utilities Department To Propose Two Rate Changes

The Los Alamos Department of Public Utilities (DPU) is proposing two rate changes, for electric and sewer services, and a future rate restructuring that would allow DPU to implement Time-of-Use billing for electric service.
Proposals for the rate ordinances will be introduced to the BPU at its regular monthly meeting at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 19, with the public hearings at the following BPU meeting at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 16. ITHACA — The release of the 2025 U.S. State of the Birds report was announced today at the 90th annual North American Wildlife and Natural Resources Conference in Louisville, Kentucky.
The report, produced by a coalition of leading science and conservation organizations, reveals continued widespread declines in American bird populations across all mainland and marine habitats, with 229 species requiring urgent conservation action. The report comes five years after the landmark 2019 study that documented the loss of 3 billion birds in North America over 50 years. Read More
