The Santa Fe New Mexican
Sen. Michael Padilla paraphrased Billy Joel before the House Energy, Environment and Natural Resources Committee Tuesday: “Of course, we didn’t set the [fire].”
“That was a song, wasn’t it?” he added. “Back in the ’80s?”
Fire is part of the life cycle of New Mexico’s forest, the senator noted. One could even say it’s been always burning, since the world’s been turning.
But Padilla, D-Albuquerque, argued that’s no reason for New Mexico to delay in thinning Read More

Daily Postcard: A view of a felsenmeer along the slope of Redondo Peak in Valle Caldera. Felsenmeer rock fields are exposed rock outcrops or scree fields that make up only about 1% of Valles Caldera National Preserve’s land area. A felsenmeer is a unique environment characterized more by rocks than by plants. Growing conditions for plants are harsh because the poorly developed soils don’t hold much water. Courtesy/NPS/R. It’s an opportunity to give our community something it’s lacking: a bike park.
Our town is home to some of the best mountain biking in New Mexico, yet most trails cater to advanced riders, leaving beginners and kids without a safe place to learn. A bike park—with a paved pump track and skills area—would provide a dedicated space Read More

Winter can be good time to see how trees grow since their branches are free of leafs. Branches grow in different ways depending on what they are doing to help the tree grow. The branches may weigh hundred of pounds in a large tree. The primary purpose of the trunk emerging from the ground therefore is to support the rest of the tree. A trunk grows vertically since the weights of the branches above it now are directed downward. A Read More

House Bill 13 — or the Power Up New Mexico Act — passed the House Saturday afternoon after a long debate by a mostly party-line vote of 36-23.
Democrats argue it’s an important Read More
