SANTA FE — A major winter storm, with potential blizzard conditions has impacted New Mexico. Residents are urged to take immediate precautions to protect themselves, their families and pets from severe weather hazards.

According to the National Weather Service, this weather system is expected to bring significant snowfall, dangerously low visibility, powerful winds, and freezing temperatures, particularly in northern New Mexico and the Rio Grande Valley.

LA Cares To Postpone Food Distribution For One Week

LA Cares News:

Today, Wednesday, Nov. 6, we are announcing a delay for distribution until next week, Nov. 14/15.

There will be NO LA Cares food distribution this week due to inclement weather.

We will be reaching out to volunteers and clients through phone calls and email to inform them of the change.

In the event that the Lab/Schools declare a Snow Day on a LA Cares distribution day, for the safety of clients and volunteers, LA Cares will postpone food distribution for one week.

Los Alamos Public Schools (LAPS) will be on a 2-hour delay Thursday, Nov. 7 for all PreK 4y-12th grades.

All schools will start 2 hours late and buses will arrive at stops 2 hours late.

There will be no morning 3Y classes. Afternoon 3Y will be on a regular schedule.

The Betty Ehart and White Rock Senior Activity Centers are closed due to the winter storm moving into the region.

The centers have been closed since 2 p.m. today. Staff will keep the community and members informed of any delayed opening or closure Thursday through Facebook, email, voicemail and its website.

Social Services Shares Locations For Individuals Who Need To Get Inside From Inclement Weather

COUNTY News:

During inclement weather, individuals stranded or otherwise facing the elements may find themselves in need of a safe place to stay warm.

Los Alamos County Social Services Division has identified several locations where individuals can temporarily seek shelter to warm up. While these sites may not offer full amenities such as restrooms, they provide a safe environment to avoid the elements.

The following locations are currently open to the public:

Los Alamos High School Football First Round State Tournament Game Rescheduled For Saturday

LAPS News:

Due to the weather forecast for Friday, the first round of the NMAA State Football Tournament game between Los Alamos High School and Valley High School has been moved to Saturday, No. 9.

The game will be played at Sullivan Field. Game time is 12 p.m. Gates will open at 11 a.m.

Tickets are $12 for adults, $7 for students, military and seniors (age 65 and older). Tickets may be purchased in advance through GoFan.

Early Closure Of Non-essential County Government Services Due To Inclement Weather

Acting Los Alamos County Manager Linda Matteson has ordered an early release for non-essential county employees and the early closure of all non-essential county government facilities at 2 p.m. today, Nov. 6, due to inclement weather.

LAPS Adjusts Dismissal Times In Response To Storm

LAPS News:

Los Alamos Public Schools (LAPS) have been in discussions with local experts regarding the approaching storm. The storm has shifted some, and they expect the temperatures to drop and the snow fall to increase significantly between 3-6 p.m. today.

In order to ensure that LAPS can get students home safely, It will be releasing middle and high school students early today. Elementary schools will have a regular dismissal.

Maria Jönsson studied textiles at Sigtuna Folk College in Sweden in the mid 1980s. She then went on to receive a BFA and MA in Studio Art Fiber/Fabric at Northern Illinois University in 1989/1991. During her years in Sweden she learned more traditional weaving techniques. In the US she explored and experimented with non-traditional materials in weaving such as metal, wire, or any material that could be woven on a loom.

After moving to New Mexico in the 1990s she continued to create and sell her fiber art while building a career as an archaeologist. Read More

Valles Caldera National Preserve Backcountry Vehicle Route Closed For Season

Valles Caldera National Preserve has closed the backcountry vehicle route early this year due to the recent snowstorm and the forecast for additional snow over the next few days.

Normally, the route remains open through Nov. 15. The vehicle route is slated to open again May 15, 2025, weather-permitting.

Visitors to the park can still enjoy exploring the front-country of the park, driving as far as the Cabin District on the north side of Valle Grande.
