While on an Alaskan cruise Saturday, Los Alamos Daily Post photographer/videographer Nate Limback had the opportunity to sail next to an active US Navy Virginia Class SSN attack submarine. According to the cruise captain, it is rare to see a submarine on the surface so far out in the ocean. Los Alamos County Parks, Recreation and Open Space Divisions have partnered up with the Pajarito Astronomers for the Dark Night program.
Anyone with an interest in star gazing and the chance to look through a telescope is invited to come out to Spirio Soccer Fields tonight, July 15, at Overlook Park in White Rock.
Volunteers from the Pajarito Astronomers Club will be present with telescopes starting about 8:30 p.m. until at least 11 p.m., and as late as midnight if there is continued interest.

Jonathan Dowell will present his bird photography to the Los Alamos Photo Club at 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 18 at Fuller Lodge.
Since 2019, Dowell has photographed more than 500 bird species across the US and Canada for Cornell University’s eBird citizen-science program.
Tuesday’s lecture will feature photos from Dowell’s recent visits to Kenai Peninsula National Park and Utqiagvik, AK, as well as from Los Alamos, Bosque del Apache, Carlsbad, San Diego, Cave Creek and the epic migration fallout event at High Island in 2021.

Community Invited To Name New Geese Living At Pond
The community is invited to submit name suggestions for these two new geese relocated Thursday to Ashley Pond. Someone abandoned the pair as goslings at the pond in May. They were too young to be on their own. LAPD’s Animal Control moved them to a safe location and recently had them examined by Veterinarian Kathleen Ramsay before returning them Thursday to the pond. Dr. Ramsay said the brown goose is male but it’s a bit too early to determine the gender of the white goose. The brown and white goslings left abandoned at the pond in late May are shown May 26 sitting together on a rock next to Gwen, center, and Ed. The pair have been cared for away from the pond, and today after veterinary assessment determined they are now old enough to live on the pond and safely adapt to the environment there, were released today back to the pond.
