Daily Postcard: Being in the right place at the right time and being prepared are cornerstones of wildlife photography. Jonathan and Tessa Dowell of Los Alamos were enjoying the sunset view across Pueblo Canyon this week when they heard a couple of Say’s Phoebes calling from a juniper tree below. Jonathan swung his spotting scope around to try to get a look, but the first bird in the viewfinder was definitely not a Say’s Phoebe. In response to very high weather conditions and elevated fire danger, Los Alamos Fire Department (LAFD) has implemented the following fire restrictions within the county boundary. Effective as of 2 p.m. today, Tuesday July 11, 2023, the below fire restrictions are in place.
This Order supersedes any previously announced fire restrictions.
Pursuant to Section 22-33(e)(2) of the Los Alamos County Code, the following are PROHIBITED:
- Any fire permits for recreational fire devices issued prior to the imposition of these fire restrictions are suspended.

BLM Plans Temporary Closure Of Camel Tracks Area
BLM News:
TAOS — The Bureau of Land Management Taos Field Office has issued a two-week temporary closure order for parts of La Bajada Mesa within Santa Fe County, in the area commonly referred to as Camel Tracks.
This two-week temporary order is in effect July 17-July 31, 2023, and applies to approximately 1,280 acres of public lands.
The BLM proposes to design and build two recreational target shooting ranges within Santa Fe County, and field surveys are needed for an environmental assessment pursuant to the National Environmental Policy Act.

Los Alamos DPU To Dump Trash Bag Sales
COUNTY News:
Due to customer demand, trash bags have been sold through the Customer Care Center (CCC), a division of the Department of Public Utilities (DPU) since curbside bins were rolled out to the public almost 20 years ago.
DPU will discontinue the offering once all existing inventory is depleted.
Trash bags can be purchased for $18.50 per box of 200 while supplies last.
The CCC is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday on the ground floor of the Los Alamos County Municipal Building at 1000 Central Ave. Read More
