Division Director Transitions At Energy, Minerals And Natural Resources Department
EMNRD News:
SANTA FE — The New Mexico Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources Department announced Thursday that two of its division directors will be leaving the agency at the end of 2022.
Oil Conservation Division Director Adrienne Sandoval has accepted the position of Air and Radiation Director for the US Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Region 8 Office in Denver. Dec. 31 is her last day with EMNRD. She has been OCD director since April of 2019.
Also Dec. 31, Mining and Minerals Division Director Jerry Schoeppner heads into retirement, wrapping up a 26-year state government career. Read More
New Mexico Wine Growers Pledge $15k To Restore National Forests After Worst Wildfire Season In State History

The New Mexico Wine and Grape Growers Association and Noisy Water Winery are donating $15,000 to the National Forest Foundation to restore and improve National Forests in New Mexico following the worst fire season in New Mexico history.
Their fundraising efforts continue this holiday season. Noisy Water Winery will donate an additional $3.00 from each bottle of their Wild White wine sold.

House Passes Bill To Protect Firefighters From Exposure To Toxic ‘Forever Chemicals’

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Environmental Working Group applauds the House for passing a bill to help protect firefighters from exposure to the toxic “forever chemicals” known as PFAS widely used in their tools and equipment.
The bipartisan legislation, the Protecting Firefighters from Adverse Substances (PFAS) Act, has already cleared the Senate and now heads to President Joe Biden’s desk. Environment Department Reviewing Abatement Plan To Investigate Chlorinated Solvent Contamination At Former Alamogordo Dry Cleaner
NMED News:
ALAMOGORDO — The New Mexico Environment Department (NMED) is reviewing a Stage 1 Abatement Plan (Plan) for the former Acme Hometown Cleaners dry-cleaning facility at 901 10th St., Alamogordo(Site).
The owners of the Site submitted the Plan to NMED to investigate and define the extent of groundwater and soil contamination from a release of tetrachloroethylene, also known as per chloroethene or PCE. PCE is a toxic chemical commonly used at dry cleaning facilities, which has been recently and widely replaced by alternative cleaners. The Site has been vacant since 2016.

Streets crews will be removing dead trees along the west side of North Road between Sycamore and Quemazon Road.

Game & Fish Officers Free Buck Of Hammock Headgear!
View of the buck spotted by a local resident this morning on Sandia still tangled in hammock headgear. After seeing the announcement asking for the community’s help published this morning in the Los Alamos Daily Post, New Mexico Game & Fish Conservation Officers Perraglio and Otero were notified by the resident of the location of the buck which was hanging out with four does grazing in a yard on Sandia. The officers tranquilized the buck and removed the hammock tangled in its antlers. The buck was revived and observed for a period of time until it wondered off in search of his does. EMNRD Issues Enforcement Action With DCP Operating Company For Unauthorized Release, Reporting Violations
EMNRD News:
SANTA FE — The Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources Department (EMNRD) issued a notice of violation (NOV) to DCP Operating Company, LP (DCP) for an unauthorized release, failure to comply with initial response requirements, failure to notify the Oil Conservation Division within 24 hours of discovery of a major release and for failure to file a complete and accurate remediation plan (Form C-141) within 15 days.
DCP has been assessed a civil penalty of $66,800 and ordered to take actions to prevent the violations from occurring again.

Daily Postcard: A young elk is spotted chewing on a twig Nov. 19 at Bandelier National Monument. Winter is the best time to see elk. Elk spend much of the warmer months at the higher elevations within Bandelier or in nearby Valles Caldera National Preserve. Once the snows begin to fall and vegetation in the mountains is less accessible, the elk begin moving downward in elevation and can readily be seen along the main entrance road and N.M. 4 when driving to the park.
