USDA Forest Service Requests Modification Or Clarification Of Order To Cease Timber Management

ALBUQUERQUE ― The USDA Forest Service received in September an order from the United States District Court for the District of Arizona stating that the agency’s “timber management” actions must cease on six national forests in Arizona and New Mexico pending formal consultation regarding potential effects to the Mexican spotted owl. 
 
The Court quickly responded to the request to modify the order and allowed the cutting and collection of fuelwood, which both the plaintiff and the Forest Service supported.

NMED Monitoring Effects Of Colorado Mine Spill

The New Mexico Environment Department (NMED) was notified by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) earlier today of a mine release into the Animas River north of Silverton, Colo.
 
Discharges observed Thursday from the Silver Wing Mine in southern Colorado caused discoloration of the Animas River. NMED is closely monitoring real-time data from the river in Colorado and New Mexico, which do not currently indicate any evidence of water quality impacts that could affect human health and the environment.

Girl Scout Troop 10074 planted 44 Ponderosa Pine seedlings Sunday, Oct. 6 near the Perimeter Trail in the Cerro Grande burn scar. The seedlings were grown by a local woman from seeds from the Ponderosa Pine in her backyard. Troop 10074 would like to thank her, and also Eric Peterson of the Los Alamos County Parks, Recreation, and Open Spaces Division for providing tools for the project. ANGEL FIRE ― The Forest Stewards Guild (FSG), working closely with the New Mexico State Land Office (SLO), New Mexico State Forestry, Moreno Valley Fire Department, and Angel Fire Fire Department have been preparing the area around Little Coyote Creek for the return of fire since 2008.
 
The burn will take place on state trust land near Black Lake. This burn builds on years and millions of dollars of investments aimed at maintaining forest health and reducing wildfire risk to nearby communities. This burn area was identified as a high priority in the Enchanted Circle
