Citing Methane Waste Concerns, Conservation Groups File Protest On New Mexico Lease Sale In Permian Basin

EDF News:

ROSWELL The Environmental Defense Fund and The Wilderness Society have filed a formal protest of the Bureau of Land Management’s (BLM) plans to lease parcels of public land in southeastern New Mexico’s booming Permian Basin for oil and gas development without adequate controls to limit methane waste.

BLM estimates this sale, and ones like it, over the next 20 years could add up to 6,000 new wells to the Carlsbad region. This development could lead to the waste of $16.5 million worth of natural gas per year over the next decade, and add over 81,000 tons of harmful pollution

Weekly Fishing Report: May 29

By GEORGE MORSE

Los Alamos Daily Post

The crazy weather continues here in the Southwest. The temperature dipped  perilously close to freezing last week and some people complained about losing some tomato plants.

The wind at times was terrible last week and makes for difficult fishing conditions. Mornings are usually calmer than afternoons and evenings.

USDA News:

SANTA FE – Fire prevention staff on the Santa Fe National Forest found approximately 30 abandoned campfires over the three-day Memorial Day weekend.

Still too many, Deputy Fire Staff Officer Terrance Gallegos said, but a big improvement over the 84 abandoned campfires found over the same weekend in 2018.

The 64 percent drop in abandoned campfires – the leading human cause of wildfire – may be attributable to a concerted effort by the forest’s fire prevention team to teach visitors how to properly extinguish a campfire.

What Is Wish-Cycling And Why it’s Always A Bad Idea

COUNTY News:

We have all been there. You’re standing in front of the recycle bin with something in hand – a beverage cap, a greasy pizza box, the tinfoil lid from a sour cream container or a crinkly cellophane wrapper. You don’t completely know whether or not you can recycle it. You want to do your part for the environment by recycling more, so you throw it in the recycle bin and assume the recycling facilities will sort it out. No harm, no foul – right? Wrong!

“Wish- Cycling” is a term recycler’s use when referring to this kind of well-intended, but ultimately harmful behavior. Though it
