Los Alamos Neighborhood Awakens To Bears In Tree

Three bears are spotted hanging out this morning in a tree behind a Woodland Road in Los Alamos. The two young bears climbed to the top and seemed to be content to stay there, while the agitated mother continued her quest to reach them. Four hours later the bears remain in the tree. According to the Los Alamos Police Department, New Mexico Game & Fish Department officials were notified but said to just leave the bears alone. This Western Tanager was spotted Sunday in the backyard of a residence near Canyon Glen Road in Los Alamos. According to allaboutbirds.org, these birds live in open woods all over the west, particularly among evergreens, where they often stay hidden in the canopy. The State Game and Fish Department has resumed its stockings of bigger-than-average rainbow trout throughout Northern New Mexico. These fish will average more than 15 inches in size and provide anglers with a chance to catch a big trout they would not otherwise have.

Forest Increases Public Engagement To Prevent Fires

SANTA FE – Santa Fe National Forest (SFNF) personnel will engage the public more often than usual to increase fire prevention awareness and reduce the chances for wildfires while in Stage 2 fire restrictions.

The Stage 2 fire restrictions went into effect across the forest May 7 and will remain until conditions allow forest officials to change or lift the restrictions.

BPU Will Decide County’s Participation In Coal Plant Post 2022

COUNTY News:

Los Alamos Department of Public Utilities will be recommending to its Board of Public Utilities (BPU) to let the county’s contract for a three percent ownership share in the San Juan Generating Station expire in 2022. 

Consideration of this recommendation will occur at the Wednesday, May 16, BPU meeting scheduled at 5:30 p.m. in Council Chambers at the Municipal Building, 1000 Central Ave. The BPU decision will then be forwarded to the County Council for concurrence.
