Hybrid Public Meeting To Discuss Depressurization Of Flanged Tritium Waste Containers Aug. 20 At SALA

The U.S. Department of Energy, National Nuclear Security Administration’s (DOE/NNSA) Los Alamos Field Office and the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) will hold a hybrid public meeting to discuss the controlled depressurization of headspace gas from four flanged tritium waste containers (FTWCs) at Technical Area 54, Area G, at LANL.

The meeting is 5:30-7:30 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 20, at SALA Los Alamos Event Center, 2551 Central Ave.

An exploratory walk can lead to plants that look very different from one another or very much alike. The Spanish broom is an example. It is a bush that may grow six to eight feet high. It is somewhat circular in shape and can have hundreds of straight slim stems.

The stems are up to an eighth of inch wide, green colored, and two to three feet long. A stem may have few small leaves growing toward it base, (see Picture 1). It is at its flowering peak in June.

SILVER CITY — The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service today released into the wild an endangered Mexican gray wolf called Asha, along with her mate and pups. Asha was featured in National Geographic and other media for twice roaming north of Interstate 40 in New Mexico before being captured and kept in prolonged captivity for having strayed beyond the arbitrary northern boundary of the Mexican Wolf Experimental Population Area.

At its next meeting, the Los Alamos Master Gardeners Association will present Bethany Abrahamson, Cooperative Extension Agriculture Agent from Sandoval County, who will speak on the dangers and realities of invasive insects in New Mexico.

Having worked as an entomology and nursery inspector with the New Mexico Department of Agriculture for nearly 10 years, Abrahamson helped protect the state from invasive pests, including Japanese beetle and pecan weevil.

LANL: Community Relations Plan For Hazardous Waste Facility Permit — Request For Input

LANL News:

The Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) generates some hazardous and mixed waste. In November 2010, the New Mexico Environment Department (NMED) issued LANL Hazardous Waste Facility Permit (EPA ID Number NM0890010515-1).

The Permit establishes standards for how LANL manages, stores and treats hazardous wastes on-site and for the closure and post-closure care of permitted waste management units.

In compliance with the permit, LANL updates a Community Relations Plan annually, pending input from the public.

Laguna Wildfire Information Moves To Weekly Updates

Forest Service News:

The Laguna Wildfire, sparked by lightning on June 25, has now consumed 17,415 acres and remains 78 percent contained. The fire is in the Coyote Ranger District, 8 miles north of N.M. 96 and west of the Chama River Canyon Wilderness.

Note: Updates will be provided once a week, starting today, Monday, Aug. 4, unless significant activity or changes occur. The next Laguna Wildfire Daily Update will be provided Monday, Aug. 11.

BLM Announces Nov. 2025 Sale Of Oil And Gas Leases In New Mexico And Oklahoma

BLM News:

SANTA FE — The Bureau of Land Management New Mexico State Office today announced an oil and gas lease sale scheduled for Nov. 6, 2025, to offer 21 oil and gas parcels totaling 8,843 acres in New Mexico and Oklahoma.

The BLM completed scoping on these parcels in March 2025 and held a public comment period that closed in May 2025 on the parcels and the related environmental analysis. A 30-day public protest period to receive additional public input opened today and will close Sept. 3, 2025.
