PEEC’s Monday Nature Playtime Back Aug. 4

The Pajarito Environmental Education Center (PEEC) is excited to announce the return of its popular Nature Playtime program beginning at 10 a.m., Monday, Aug. 4, at Los Alamos Nature Center. This free, weekly program is designed for toddlers, preschoolers, and their caregivers to explore the natural world through play, creativity, and discovery.

The month of August begins Friday. This is the beginning of the “dog days of summer. 

Warm temperatures and low streamflows put a damper on trout streams and rivers. This is a good time to give trout a rest. Warm water temperatures over 70-degrees make the trout lethargic and over 75 degrees can kill them. 

Even practicing catch -and-release is discouraged as the stress of being caught and released can prove fatal to trout that are already heat-stressed.

Federal Disaster Unemployment Assistance Approved For New Mexico Storm Recovery

ALBUQUERQUE — President Donald Trump approved disaster aid for New Mexico, authorizing unemployment assistance for Lincoln County residents and businesses affected by severe storms, flooding, and landslides that struck June 23 at the request of Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham.

The Los Alamos Department of Public Utilities (DPU) wants to better understand community perspectives on electrification, or the gradual transition away from natural gas usage to electricity only.

An online survey on the topic was emailed to DPU’s utility customers today. The survey seeks feedback on DPU’s goal of achieving zero natural gas usage by 2070. A collaborative effort, the survey is being distributed by DPU while research and analysis is being conducted by the University of New Mexico (UNM) and New Mexico State University (NMSU).

ALBUQUERQUE — Thirty-five conservation organizations asked the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service not to recapture a Mexican gray wolf who crossed Interstate 40 in New Mexico over the weekend. Air Force Denies State Inspectors Access To Test For Toxic PFAS On Cannon Air Force Base

SANTA FE — New Mexico Environment Department Sec. James Kenney and New Mexico Attorney General Raúl Torrez today asked a state court to order Cannon Air Force Base near Clovis to comply with state law and let inspectors collect on-site samples of toxic PFAS.

The motion follows Cannon officials’ refusal to allow NMED inspectors to conduct environmental sampling during a regulatory inspection on July 15.
