CANJILON—Fire officials responded Thursday night to a fire started in sagebrush within the Echo Amphitheatre parking area in the Carson National Forest near Abiquiu.
The fire is human caused and has been fully contained with minimal heat remaining.
Public safety is the number one priority and the Echo Amphitheatre day use area and campground will be closed until further notice as fire managers continue to monitor the fire.

About 20 people strapped on their bicycle helmets and climbed on their bikes Thursday to take part in Los Alamos County’s community bike ride.

Local Smoky Haze Caused By Fire In Bonita Canyon
Smoky haze from a lightning-sparked fire 19 miles north of El Rito in Bonita Canyon fills the sky this morning looking east from the Main Hill Road. NMDOH Launches Statewide Summer Awareness Campaign To Prevent Spread Of Zika Virus
NMDOH News:
The New Mexico Department of Health (NMDOH) announced the launch of a summer campaign to educate the public about Zika virus prevention. So far this year, there has been just one reported case of West Nile Virus and no reported cases of Zika Virus in New Mexico. However, we are entering the 2017 mosquito season.
The campaign focuses on providing information to pregnant women and their partners who may be considering travel to areas where Zika virus transmission is ongoing.

EL RITO — Each year the El Rito Ranger District hosts thousands of visitors between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Unfortunately, a small number of these visitors behave badly and cause big problems for the forest. Fire prevention patrols in the forest find abandoned or unattended campfires almost every day.
Abandoned campfires are the leading human cause of wildfire. Every large wildfire begins as a small fire. In 2011 the Wallow wildfire in Arizona burned 522,000+ acres. One small campfire left unattended burned an area 28 miles by 28 miles.

New President, Project Manager Bruce Covert Takes Helm For Nuclear Waste Partnership LLC At WIPP

Nuclear Waste Partnership LLC (NWP), the AECOM-led management and operating contractor for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP), has a new president and project manager this week. Bruce Covert has replaced Phil Breidenbach who, for the past two years, has led NWP efforts to safely recover the facility and resume WIPP transuranic waste emplacement operations.
