This late in the summer we have cucumbers by the buckets and are actively giving them away to any willing recipient and making pickles by the barrel most weekends. Cucumbers are one of those very giving plants that are prolific in their yield and easy in their manner. You don’t have to be a horticulturalist or a gherkin professional to grow  cucumbers in New Mexico and execute a batch of pickles. Be aware that 2-3 plants will yield enough Read More

Leonard: Lack Confidence? Gain It Now By Embracing Life’s Struggles

By LAURA LEONARD
Doctor of Chiropractic
Los Alamos

I was suffering from writers block today and decided the best way to cure it was to go for a mountain bike ride. This led me to an ‘ah-ha’ moment as I decided to roll through a personally dreaded section of rocks, which have taken me down a couple of times. Not fun and quite painful to say the least. Today’s attempt yielded success. I rolled through the jaws of death quite smoothly, letting out a loud ‘woohoo’ to celebrate the occasion.

The ‘ah-ha’ moment came with the realization that it’s the ability to persevere through life’s bumps and negative experiences Read More

Home Country By Slim Randles: Missing Guv Reeve

Home Country
By SLIM RANDLES

Looking around at all the yard signs and hearing politicians tell us on television what a lying crook their competition is, I have to admit I miss Guv Reeve.

Guv had a real first name, but I sure don’t recall it now, because this was back in the 1960s and 1970s in the high desert of California. He had his first name legally changed to Guv so everyone would know what he was all about. Every four years, he ran for governor. I worked for the Victor Valley Daily Press in Victorville, which is just 30 miles from Barstow, where everyone’s car breaks down on the way to Vegas.

Fr. Glenn: The Humble Will Be Exalted

By Fr. Glenn Jones:

Not infrequently you’ll see persons very actively lobbying for this or that deceased person to be declared a saint. But the person is a saint or not; our lobbying for such does nothing for his eternal condition. Some such activists might protest: “So that our town/region/state has a declared saint!” Well, if the intent is to have an example from “one of their own” persons can look to so as to realize the very real achievability of holiness, it is a good thing. The danger, however – as has happened often in the past – is boasting about “having” a local saint, vicariously basking in the Read More

“Mary Magdalene” in the 2018 film of the same name (on Netflix), describes to Jesus what it felt like when she and her brothers would hold their breaths, as long as they could underwater. Immersed, floating, surrounded, and embraced by calm… “Is that what it feels like to be one with God,” she asks him? This Jesus responds with a gentle smile, “No one has ever asked me that before.”
