Lilacs have been the friends and guides of northern New Mexican farmers for centuries. They are found in every garden nook and cranny and on nearly every old farm property in Northern New Mexico. Sometimes they are just old saplings blooming along acequias on abandoned homesteads but they are participants in an ancient technique of farming known as phenology.

Phenology is the study of cyclical and seasonal natural phenomena, especially in relation to climate, Read More

Home Country
By SLIM RANDLES

It was just one of those things. It didn’t really mean Marvin Pincus had lost his mind.

Consider this yourself for a minute. Marvin had opened the mail that morning and in it was the Fenwick glass fly rod he’d ordered. Oh, it was used, of course. But there’s a feel to a Fenwick that only a man dedicated to a life of using dry flies can appreciate.

Marvin had broken his ankle the previous week and was temporarily in a wheelchair. It was his right ankle, so he couldn’t drive down to the creek. And there, in his hands, was the Fenwick. He put it together, attached a reel and some four-weight Read More

Fr. Glenn: Confronting Imperfection

By Fr. Glen Jones:

We do tend to love notoriety and attention … or at least think we do. But often becomes too much, and the notables again seek refuge in blissful anonymity. Many of us older folks remember the wedding of Prince Charles and Diana—she glowing and admired by millions. And yet, after many ups and downs in her life, Diana ended up dying while fleeing the spotlight. And as any celebrity finds all too soon, one thing people Read More
