When temperatures drop at this time of the year, we become more aware of the homeless in our New Mexico communities when the risk of hypothermia joins the long list of other challenges they face. Since June, parishioners at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church have been putting together bags for distribution to the homeless.

Wording on the bags is a quote from St. Margaret Mary Alacoque, which states, “The Divine Heart of Jesus is an ocean full of all good Read More

Just One Thing To Do This Week: Drink More Water

By MARY BETH MAASSEN
Los Alamos

As I mentioned last week my new year endeavor is to adopt one new behavior each week that brings me, my family, and the planet a little closer to better health.

Last week I committed to eating less than six teaspoons of sugar each day. I thought this would be a relatively easy way to reduce calories and eliminate an unhealthy food from my diet. Good lord I did not know what I was getting into!

First there is just the math of converting grams to teaspoons (who invented teaspoons and tablespoons anyway?) To make it easier I switched to metric and instead of six teaspoons Read More

Happy New Year … Make Resolutions Stick In 2017!

YMCA News:

Along with singing “Auld Lang Syne” at the start of the New Year, making resolutions is a tradition for millions of Americans. However, while choosing a resolution is easy, sticking to it can be impossible. A 2014 YMCA of the USA survey found that less than a quarter of respondents kept their resolutions. Many (71 percent) tried, but stated that they fell short of their goals, while 40 percent confessed that gave up within the first few months, even weeks, of the New Year.

This year, The Family YMCA is encouraging community members to give their New Year’s resolutions a boost by creating Read More

Pastor Granillo: Uncommon Peace

By Pastor Raul Granillo
Los Alamos

“It is hard for you to kick against the goads.” (Acts 26:14 NIV)

I woke up Friday morning to find my 7-year- old little girl curled up next to me. I looked at the clock and thought, “I really need to start the day,” but I couldn’t bring myself to do anything but lay beside this sweet little girl.

She looked so peaceful with her head on my arm holding my hand. I laid there, next to her, and enjoyed the sensation of absolute peace for another hour before I was rudely disturbed by the alarm clock. Let the chaos begin!

Residential construction leaders have begun predicting green building trends for 2017.

Most homebuyers aren’t looking for a LEED label on a new home, but they are looking for high performance and comfort.

That’s the consensus from builders and other industry professionals who have participated in the Excellence & Building Conference in Texas.

Here’s an overview of insights and trends shared by building professionals.

IRS: Time Is Running Short For 2016 Tax Moves

IRS News:

PHOENIX — The Internal Revenue Service wants taxpayers to know they have some time left to make any final tax moves for the 2016 tax year.

“There are many opportunities for taxpayers to legitimately reduce taxes or defer income as the year winds down,” IRS spokesman Bill Brunson said. “A little tax planning now could save you time and money later.”

A few tax items to consider:

  • Make Charitable Contributions. Make charitable contributions (cash or non-cash items) on or before Dec. 31. Give to a qualified public charity and keep a paper trail. Non-cash items such as clothing

Just One Thing To Do This Week: Reduce Sugar

By MARY BETH MAASSEN
Los Alamos

I have exciting news to start off 2017 on a good note! I finally won the Powerball!  Of course I had been hoping to win the $54 million jackpot, and I only won $6, but it is a start. I had prayed to win, but I guess I was not specific enough, so my bad. It looks like once again the responsibility for my happiness lies within me and not with winning the Powerball. I am not surprised.

I am approaching 2017 with great anticipation of fresh starts and new successes to be had. But somehow I find myself once again championing the same New Year resolutions that I have every year for Read More

‘The Lodge’ Menu Surfaces After 26 Years

By CAROL A. CLARK
Los Alamos Daily Post

Rummaging through a drawer some 26 years after his beloved wife died, Roy Hopwood found a menu from one of the couple’s visits to “The Lodge” restaurant in Fuller Lodge.

“My wife Sharon collected things,” Hopwood said with a smile. “I hadn’t looked in that drawer in a longtime and was very surprised to find that old menu.”

He can’t recall the date he and his wife dined at The Lodge and she received the menu but its cover shows vehicles from the 1950s. Food prices include a prime rib sandwich for 95 cents.

Hopwood explained that he arrived Read More

Griggs: Dateline – Villa Tangara, Panajachel, Guatemala

“Come South for Gold and Glory!”

What a tantalizing call to action: “Come south of the border and ride with Pancho Villa, the Liberator of Mexico!”

I was ready for a change. The brutal campaign season just ended in the States. The Wall was going up. My meager Social Security pension fund was about to be looted. And on top of that, winter was thrusting its cold shoulder onto the stage.

“Enlistments Taken in Juarez, Mexico.” Perfect – I was on my way across the Rio Grande, anyway, to build a house in Ciudad Juarez with a group from Read More

Home Country: Impromptu Party

By SLIM RANDLES

It began the way most miracles do: by accident or the hand of God, take your pick.

It might have been the weather, at least partly. For December, the day had been almost balmy and warm. You know, sweaters instead of heavy coats. No mittens in sight.

Then there were Christmas lights on the stores, and that little bunch of Girl Scouts out raising money in front of the Read Me Now bookstore. Jasper Blankenship was inside going through the books to fortify his cabin’s library for winter and sat, listening with a smile to the girls as they laughed and waited for customers that weren’t really Read More
