Pope: Heartwarming Story For Our Grievers And Friends

By AMBER POPE
Rivera Family Funeral Home

Unfortunately, a lot of us know the tremendous human task of navigating grief. As winter approaches, the cold reminds us of another, or a first, year without our loved one. One Los Alamos couple mourning the loss of their son has made a big impact this season with their anonymous gift to another mom this year, and the story might just ease and inspire the rest of us.

After carefully crafting a design for their son’s monument at Guaje Pines Cemetery, they waited patiently while the granite tribute was born into a permanent piece of remembrance. During many visits Read More

As a Los Alamos resident, I am probably among the few who have kept photos taken a quarter century ago with a note like this one, “1998: A Flock of Geese and Ducks in Ashley Pond”. But I believe many of us may still remember the incident when the aerator pump failed, the pond froze, some of these happy geese and ducks residing in Ashley Pond were rescued, and others disappeared.

During this Christmas Holiday, Los Alamos folks will celebrate the life Read More

Amateur Naturalist: A Volcanic Rocky Landscape – Part 1

By ROBERT DRYJA
Los Alamos

Trees were covered with golden leaves in October. These have fallen and blown away with the arrival of November. A new view of the landscape has become visible. A variety of fields among the mountain sides of a volcano now may be easily seen in a forest of tree trunks. Some fields may be level without rocks or boulders on their surface. Others may have an occasional boulder sitting on them. Still other may boulders lying about regularly.

What contributes to theses differences from field to field? Simply look at the landscape to see two factors. One factor relates to the creation Read More

Los Alamos Daily Post

Temperatures took a plunge in Northern New Mexico over the weekend. Below zero readings were not uncommon and low temperatures in the teens the standard.

The frigid conditions led to the closure of several popular fishing locations.

Eagle Nest Lake and Fenton Lake were both closed to ice fishing due to unsafe ice conditions. Both of these lakes are in State Parks. Park personnel will monitor the ice thickness and when it is deemed safe they will open for ice fishing.

Monastery Lake near Pecos has been closed. Ice fishing is never allowed at Read More

Benson: Bethlehem Is Canceling Christmas

By JODY BENSON
Los Alamos

Christmas celebrates new birth that brings the hope of life renewed. Each of us is born to bring our own individual gifts to a world that, without every single us, is incomplete. In the Christian tradition, Jesus represents that helpless, marginalized infant whose survival depends on his family and the grace and generosity of a community of strangers. He is also the one who, for Christians, is the promised Prince of Peace, and thus the model for how God relates to us and how we should relate to everyone else.

Bethlehem, a Palestinian town in the occupied West Bank of Israel, Read More

For the Los Alamos Daily Post

With a name like Cape Foulweather, I expected gusty winds and pelting rain on my early winter visit to this area of the Oregon Coast. After all, Captain Cook had coined the name for the place due to the fierce weather and rough ocean conditions he and his crew encountered back in 1778. But as I stood overlooking the scene, this situation couldn’t be further from the truth.

Foulweather is one of the most popular and picturesque spots along Read More
