This rule was not strictly enforced in recent years due to the pandemic, so some schools have dropped their instructional days below 180. In Read More

When the weather changes, golden leaves float to the ground and temperatures plummet, we crave comfort food to warm our bodies and chase away the winter blues. One great dish that comes to mind and is easy to make and serve is braised beef in a green chile sauce. Chanukkah: The Jewish Winter Holiday

By Rabbi JACK SHLACHTER
Los Alamos Jewish Center

To really appreciate the minor, 8-day Jewish holiday that begins this year on December 7th at sundown, it helps to have a sinus infection. In Hebrew, there’s no ambiguity about the spelling of this eight-day celebration of a victory by Jews over the Greeks who had defiled the Jewish Temple in Jerusalem – it’s חֲנוּכָּה‎. The name of the holiday means (re)dedication, and the word begins with a guttural letter. But therein lies the problem – English has no guttural letter. The sound can perhaps be described as what we hear when someone is clearing their Read More

By PAUL J. GESSING
President
The Rio Grande Foundation

According to news reports Los Alamos Council will soon consider adopting a local minimum wage of $15.00 with a minimum wage for tipped workers of $3.75 an hour and a minimum wage for student workers of $13.50 an hour. If adopted the new wage rates would become effective on July 1, 2025, and would be adjusted upward based on the consumer price index into the future.

New Mexico’s minimum wage is currently set at $12 an hour under a law passed by the Legislature and signed by Gov. Lujan Grisham in 2019. But, the real minimum wage is whatever a willing Read More

It’s the holidays, and everything is festive and merry, but online scammers are just gearing up for another big season … tax filing time. Last week the IRS and their Security Summit Partners issued a warning to the public to stay alert against emerging scams during the upcoming filing season.
