McQuiston: Deer In The Headlights 5 Tips To Avoid Collision
By ALLEN MCQUISTON
Jemez Insurance Agency
On average, the U.S. experiences around 2.1 million deer-vehicle collisions each year. These incidents are responsible for over $10 billion in economic losses as well as 59,000 human injuries and 440 human deaths.
Cars hitting deer constitute the largest collision category involving human and vehicle costs.
The average costs of a deer-related collision are staggering:
- $1,840 in vehicle repair costs
- $2,702 in medical costs
- $125 in towing and law enforcement services
- $50 for carcass removal and disposal
- Costs increase substantially if a car collides
Dannemann: Election Turnout Was Pretty Good

The recent New Mexico off-year election had an average voter turnout of about 20 percent. Some commentators said that’s a lousy turnout. I disagree. I think it’s pretty good considering the newness of this process.
It’s really different to have a ballot with only local candidates and issues.
I myself, based on the district I live in, had no city council or school board race. The only candidates on my ballot were running for the board of a soil conservation district. Like most voters, I knew very little about that district. Read More
Benson: Recap On Why We Have Kroger And The Giant Parking Lot
Thank you, Jim Rickman, for your excellent article about choosing a County Manager (“A Reality Check on County Manager Hiring” link). We have two good candidates: Tracey Jerome from El Paso, possibly one of the “outsider(s) and vagabond interjector(s) to get us across the rough seas of change” and our own Anne Laurent, both of whom will do a fine job.
I need, however, to make a couple corrections about the (yes, it’s pretty horrible) Kroger takeover of the south side of Trinity. I think many of us have forgotten the Bush-era Iraq War, stock-market-speculation, deregulated Read More
Rickman: A Reality Check On County Manager Hiring
I wish to echo recent sentiments regarding the importance of hiring the “right” County Manager. As such, it’s crucial that people understand the role of a County Manager in a Council-Manager form of government—the system used here in Los Alamos.
Under this system, it is the responsibility of the County Council to establish policy and the overall vision for the community. Creation of ordinances and budget priorities all play a critical role in the Council’s policymaking and vision implementation. On the other side of the equation, it is the County Manager’s job to Read More

Dwight Texaco: Ambler’s Texaco in Dwight, Ill. was built in 1933 and was operated for over 30 years by Basil Ambler. It continued to operate as a gas station until 1999 when it was sold to Phillip Becker who used the facility for an auto repair shop. In 2002, Becker donated the property to the town of Dwight. The station was restored and is now a visitor center for the community. The design of the structure was intended to be inviting to travelers and included residential windows and flower boxes. Fr. Glenn: Rock Bottom
Bummer. Winter cometh. Wind and cold. Snow. Long nights, short days. Little sun, bleak landscape. Bleah.
Even we who live in apartments and houses can feel this way; think of those without adequate housing or sleeping on the streets as they go through the winter. Who knows the circumstances which brought them to such a point—mental illness, misfortune, bad choices in life. One cannot help but think they must feel like they’ve hit rock bottom—the lowest point of their lives. Sadly, many may end up even lower if they don’t either change their ways or find help from another quarter; Read More

SALA Los Alamos Event Center is finishing a terrific first year providing the Los Alamos community with a vibrant and welcoming space for events and entertainment.
