School Board Extends Middle School Construction Completion Date to Nov. 26
The Los Alamos School Board held a Special Board meeting Thursday. Board President Jim Hall was absent. Board Vice-president Judy Bjarke-McKenzie participated via telephone. Dave Wharram of Gerald Martin, who serves as the owner representative for the Los Alamos Middle School construction project, briefed the Los Alamos School Board on the progress of the final phase of construction by McCarthy Building Companies. Robert Hull of Los Alamos Technical Associates enlightened the Rotary Club of Los Alamos on poisons Tuesday, specifically those used in ‘Arsenic and Old Lace’, the murder comedy playing at the Los Alamos Little Theatre. The play was based on an actual series of murders performed by Amy Archer-Gilligan on at least 20 victims at her convalescent home, Hull said. A bronze sculpture of a puppy was installed Thursday near the entrance of the Los Alamos County Animal Shelter at 226 East Road.
A new roof-top sculpture also was installed and both were created by artist Carrie Quade.
Udall Backs Measure to Protect Military Pay in Case of Government Shutdown

WASHINGTON – U.S. Sen. Tom Udall, D-N.M., announced Thursday that he is joining a bipartisan group of senators in cosponsoring a bill to protect military pay in the event of a government shutdown.
The Military Pay Protection Act, which is based on a similar proposal introduced in January, would ensure the nation’s military families, including National Guard units assisting in disaster recovery, and critical Defense Department civilian workers, would not see a delay in their paychecks if the government were to shut down.

Former Los Alamos Urologist Ordered to Leave Town Moves to Nambe Area

Former Los Alamos Urologist Pavel Mourachov reached a plea deal last June and was ordered by the court to leave town.
Magistrate Judge Pat Casados said Thursday that Mourachov has moved to the Nambe area, remains on probation and continues to wear an electronic monitoring device.

Woman on the Lam Has Surfaced

The woman who has been on the lam for more than a week turned herself in Thursday.
“She walked up to our window (inside the Justice Center) and police officers were here to arrest her,” Magistrate Judge Pat Casados said. “She had her first appearance in court and was released on a $5,000 bond pending a pre-trial.”
