‘Dinner Over Diamond’ Rescheduled For Sunday

UWNNM News:

Due to the copious amount of rain on Sunday, The United Way Youth Team rescheduled its “Dinner Over Diamond” fundraiser for 4-7 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 29 … rain or shine.

The overpass over Diamond Drive at Sullivan Field is a great vantage point to look over the town and take in the view while enjoying dinner and dessert. This unique dining experience will feature specialty pizzas and salad from Home Run Pizza and scrumptious dessert from the Los Alamos Co+op Market.

Food on the Hill: Pumpkin Turnovers

 
This Week’s Recipe:
Pumpkin Turnovers

Ingredients:

1 box of puff pastry, thawed and both sheets sliced into quarters
4 oz. of pumpkin pie filling
¼ teaspoon cinnamon
¼ teaspoon nutmeg
2 tablespoons cream
¼ cup honey
1 egg
4-5 tablespoons of sugar-in-the-raw

Directions:

Pre-heat oven to 400 degrees. Unfold each sheet of puff pastry and pinch together any tears. Cut each sheet into 4 pieces. In a small bowl, mix egg well and “paint” it on edge of the pieces. In another small bowl mix together pie filling, spices, cream and honey.

YMCA Fencing Class Starts in October

YMCA News:

New students are now being accepted for the Beginner Fencing Class starting in October. Ages 10 and up. (Next session starts February 2014.)

This course covers basic fencing strategies and footwork. The beginning/intermediate class is for participants with little or no experience. Instruction will cover use of the foil, epee strip rules, judging, and directing. The YMCA also has an advanced program for competitive fencers.

Class is 6:30-7:30 p.m. Tuesdays for Beginners and 7-8 p.m. for Advanced.

Cost is $40 per month / $20 for Y members.

LA Walks Holds Start-up Meeting

LA Walks News:

LA Walks will hold a Fall Start-up Meeting and invites public attendance. The meeting is scheduled for noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 25 in Meeting Room One (upstairs) at Mesa Public Library.

LA Walks is a citizens’ group whose mission is to support pedestrian safety, accessibility, convenience, and comfort throughout Los Alamos.

Local Geologist Patrick Rowe will lead a Pajarito Environmental Education Center (PEEC) trip to the site Saturday, Sept. 28. The group will meet at PEEC just before 8 a.m. to carpool to the site. When the Los Alamos Daily Post stopped near the gas station at Trinity and Knecht Saturday to snap a few shots of progress at the Smith’s Marketplace construction site, a man drove up in a white truck to ask if we knew it was private property. About 400 people from northern New Mexico attended a preparedness fair Saturday hosted by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Twenty four booths with activities, demonstrations and information were set up at the White Rock chapel on Grand Canyon Drive. Topics included food and water storage, 72-hour kits, outdoor cooking, finance, ham radio, bread making, how to obtain scholarships, the county’s emergency broadcast system, as well as the emergency communication system for members of the church in northern New Mexico.

LANL Announces Scholarship Winners

LANL FOUNDATION News:

Thirteen Northern New Mexicans have received $1,000 Returning Student/Regional College scholarships from the Los Alamos National Laboratory Employees’ Scholarship Fund.

The awards help students returning to a formal education for certification or a two-year degree at an accredited regional college. Many are pursuing new careers.

Funding comes from donations by LANL employees and a matching amount from Los Alamos National Security, LLC., and the scholarships are administered by the LANL Foundation.
