Despicable Me 2, directed by animation heavyweights Chris Renaud and Pierre Coffin, follows the story of the villain-turned-father Gru (Steve Carell.) Gru’s adventure to defeat a new supervillain and discover love along the way is both hilarious and enjoyable to watch.

Third Splash n Dash Wednesday

The Triatomics’ Splash n Dash #3 will be this Wednesday night. Registration will open at 6:30 p.m. at the back of the Aquatic Center and the first swimmer pushes off at 7 p.m.
This is a free event sponsored by the Triatomics Multisports Club, LA County Parks and Rec, and Los Alamos National Bank.
There are three courses this year, a 400M swim and 5K run, a 200M swim and 3K run, and for athletes ages 6 to 12, a 100M swim and 1.3 mile run.

Cañada del Buey Trail Work Progresses in White Rock
Workers install a curb along the Cañada del Buey Multi-Use Trail near Bonnie View Drive this afternoon. The contractor is placing concrete along the entire pathway, including near the Bonnieview and Longview intersection and along the north side of Longview to Rover Boulevard. Expect intermittent single lane closures with flagging operations during the concrete placement as the work progresses up Longview. Prince William was present at the birth of the infant who weighed in at 8 pounds 6 ounces.

Column: A Novel Economic Development Model
We’ve heard about economic development in Los Alamos many times and, in our opinion, the way it’s presently conceived and practiced, it’s simply counterproductive because it is not compatible with present reality or future predictions for our community, and we badly need another business development program, supported by the community.

Utilities Board Approves Gas Rate Restructure

A natural gas rate restructure proposal was approved Wednesday evening by the Board of Public Utilities.
The Los Alamos County Council must now approve the proposal and is scheduled to hear details about the restructure in August. The public will have an opportunity to weigh in on the proposal before the Council takes a vote.

Thunderstorms are a fact of life in New Mexico but the dangers of lightning have not received the recognition of the dangers of flooding associated with Monsoon Season.
Unfortunately, there have been at least two “close” calls related to lightning in Albuquerque and Santa Fe this month. Nationwide, there have been 11 lightning fatalities this year, including a 54-year-old male recently, who was walking near a reservoir in Navajo County in Arizona.

Washington Post had a story about a magician, his rabbit and bureaucracy (link listed below.) The magician had to file a “Rabbit Disaster” plan to satisfy an antiquated rule of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Evidently, the magician’s license was contingent on his rabbit rather than on his skills. My column was a pure fantasy, but maybe it was not so far-fetched?!
