Fr. Glenn: Warning … Possible Danger Ahead

By Fr. Glenn Jones:

Almost every week of the year the Catholic Church has memorials of various saints—the apostles, notable pastors, notable scholars of the past (“doctors” of the Church), and particularly charitable and self-sacrificing individuals such as Elizabeth of Hungary. And, almost every week, there are memorials of martyrs—various men and women of the very early days of faith prior to the Roman emperor Constantine granting recognition to (and eventually converting to) Christianity.

But before Constantine the Romans held a number of persecutions of Christianity, no doubt using Read More

This holiday is Biblical in origin, first alluded to in the Book of Leviticus 23:23-25 where the Jews are commanded to observe a sacred day on the first day of the seventh month. Already there’s a conundrum!  Read More

Fr. Glenn: Get Thee Behind Me, Satan!

By Fr. Glenn Jones:

Hmph. Someone brought cookies to work. Again, dang it. Well … how ‘bout just one? Well … another one won’t hurt. And before long, it’s “Is that the last of them?” Blast.

A trivial example, but … oh, the temptations of life! Always those seeking to be good persons, whether they be Christians or no, must battle those pestilently persistent deadly sins: lust, gluttony, envy, wrath, pride, greed, sloth—all, of course, rooted in selfishness. Even when we know what is right and good to do, sometimes our passions—coupled with bad judgment—lead us to surrender the will to that which departs Read More

Fr. Glenn: As You Would Receive

By Fr. Glenn Jones:

First of all, sincere condolences to all of the family and friends of Charlie McMillan. Such a tragedy to have perished in an automobile accident while still so relatively young. IHM’s parishioners in Los Alamos will remember fondly the times he and his wife Janet joined us for our Easter Mass with Charlie playing his recorder. May God grant him eternal rest, and bring comfort to his family.

Such things remind us of the preciousness of life, which young people in particular often take so cavalierly, presuming their own indestructibility. Sadly, we priests and ministers encounter Read More

Fr. Glenn: Finding Fulfillment

By Fr. Glenn Jones:

Everyone on the planet seeks to find fulfillment. One might say that every living creature seeks fulfillment in its own way—growth, procreation, and life itself. Thus the plant reaches toward sunlight, the grazer to better pastures, the carnivore to where prey is plentiful. But, of course, with we humans, just life and existence and physical contentment is not enough for most; we desire more. We desire the satisfaction—the fulfillment-of having made a difference in our lives, whether that be with descendants, or discovery, or working to make others’ lives and the world Read More

Delight. Sheer delight. That is the best description of the look on my three-year-old granddaughter’s face as she anticipated the balloon I was about to toss her. As I scrolled through Facebook videos, as I am wont to do, late last night, I came across a venerable potter somewhere in England who was constructing a “bespoke chimney pot.” Although the title was arresting, it was the fact that he placed down on his wheel nearly thirty pounds of clay that enticed me to watch the entire video (and two subsequent videos in the series, if I’m honest).

Throwing thirty pounds of clay on the pottery wheel takes an immense effort and he handled it with Read More
