Fr. Glenn: Crevasses Snowed Over
By Fr. Glenn Jones:
You know those Arctic/Antarctic adventure movies? Almost invariably they’ll have a scene or two in which one of the characters falls into a snowed-over crevasse. So, the surface upon which he thought to be securely standing turned out to be deceptive. Not secure at all.
It was interesting watching last week the Kyle Rittenhouse case. Mr. Rittenhouse shot a man in what he—and his supporters—claim was self-defense, and in what his detractors claim was premeditated murder.
As is so common these days, two sides were aligned against one another very vocally and often violently, Read More
First United Methodist Church Los Alamos Collecting Sleeping Bags For Homeless
By CAMILLE WESCOTT
First United Methodist Church News
In Los Alamos, we don’t see the homeless population.
Families sleep in their cars. Teenagers sleep on one friend’s couch, and then another friend’s couch, constantly moving from one place to another. Others camp in a campground or in the woods.
There is a need in Los Alamos County for more resources for the homeless and working poor. According to the Los Alamos Health Services Gap Analysis Final Report (March 2020), 23 percent of people in Los Alamos County classify as working poor. While they are working, they do not have enough income to pay Read More

Fr. Glenn: Seeking A Better Epitaph
By Fr. Glenn Jones:
“Well, at least I’m not as bad as X!”
Such is heard not infrequently from people defensive about some negative trait or action(s) of their own. But that’s kind of a pathetically low bar to hurdle; one can always find an example worse than oneself. After all, compared to Hitler or Vlad the Impaler, most of us look pretty good! But, imagine engraven on your future headstone: “At least he wasn’t as bad as X!” Not much of a recommendation.
And yet, we all draft our own real epitaphs. We can posture all we want, but people that really know us know the truth—or the lie—of it. Who has not been to Read More

Fr. Glenn: Making It Count
By Fr. Glenn Jones:
One of the things people often ask is whether there is reincarnation. Despite the popularization of the concept—notable in other religions especially—the Christian might note the passage that was in one of our weekly Mass readings for Nov. 7: “… it is appointed that human beings die once, and after this the judgment…” (Hebrews 9: ). We also read similarly in other scripture, such as: “Do not give your heart to sorrow; drive it away, remembering the end of life. Do not forget, there is no coming back…” (Sirach 38:20-21) Jesus Himself illustrates the finality of earthly life in Read More

Father Theophan: Ego Spots

Over the past few months, my work in the pottery shop has been on hold. I have however been working on my iconography practice, and it looks like I’ll have a show of it in July at the Library. All the more reason to keep at it.
In an icon, painted (or written) in the medieval Russian style, the first layer of pigments are the darkest. It’s called the “roskrysh”, which translated means uncovering, the image begins to be uncovered. The painting moves from dark to light, hopefully reflecting Read More
Fr. Glenn: Lifting Up
By Fr. Glenn Jones:
One of the local big news stories last week was the shooting on the movie set of “Rust”, where a well-known actor accidently shot the cinematographer with a prop pistol. But what seemed almost as tragic was the rapidity of which the actor’s political opponents (he is pro-gun control) leapt to attack and ridicule him even before photos of his profound anguish had left the front page. I could not help but recall: “Do not rejoice when your enemy falls, and let not your heart be glad when he stumbles; lest the LORD see it, and be displeased…” (Proverbs 24:17), and “…you should not have Read More

Fr. Glenn: An Exceptional Aspiration
By Fr. Glenn Jones:
“Hear me roar!”
It seems that vehicles get ever louder, whether it be the seemingly inexhaustible myriad of muscle cars, loud motorcycles, souped-up pickups or whatever. I’ve always been quite fond of quiet, so riding in a deafening vehicle never appealed. But, I suppose, it comes from the hormonally-fueled desire to dominate, and the roaring, beating of the chest, bellowing, etc., are primal declarations of strength and power—real or simply postured—a challenging to all hearers a contest of dominance … if they dare. “I’m louder, thus faster, stronger, better!” Read More

Fr. Glenn: Finding Strength
By Fr. Glenn Jones:
Well, it was definitely Friday. Lots of businesses get slammed on Mondays—car repair shops, banks, etc. But for others it can be on Fridays, usually when you have a busy weekend in the making anyway. Plans change, pressures and tempers rise, etc. So easy to just give in to anger and either lash out or despair. Or both.
Cruising the online guides the other evening, I came across a docudrama called “Shackleton’s Captain” on tubi.com—a very engaging story about the South Pole expedition in the early 1900s. Sir Ernest Shackleton gathered a crew and sought to be the first expedition Read More
