Fr. Glenn: Beginning With Me

By Fr. Glenn Jones:

So here we come to the final few days before Christmas. Now, one of the perennial Bible excerpts read during this time of year is a Messianic prophecy from Isaiah: “For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government will be upon his shoulder, and his name will be called ‘Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace’. Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end.” (Isaiah 9:6-7)

And so, as we look at our world … it’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas!

Or not.

Fr. Glenn: Reserving A Room

By Fr. Glenn Jones:

Wow … did you see the destruction from those tornadoes in Kentucky? Those poor people—so many lives lost and families devastated, and so much loss of livelihoods, homes, etc. Let’s consider how we might contribute to aid our brothers and sisters and their families. Prayer, too, is the unseen but a most effective salve for those in pain, difficulty and suffering hopelessness.

“Why does God allow such things to happen?”, is the recurrent question whenever tragedy occurs.  No answer seems sufficient, especially if we ourselves are the ones suffering; the pain is simply too near, Read More

Neighbors Invited To Sing Silent Night Dec. 24

First United Methodist Church of Los Alamos News:

Silent Night is one of the most beloved Christmas hymns around the world. It has brought people together and connected them even across enemy lines, as the famous Silent Night truce during World War I demonstrated.

It also has traditionally ended Christmas Eve services as the congregation lit candles and sang together to celebrate the birth of Christ.

Last year when they were not able to gather in the sanctuary for worship, First United Methodist Church of Los Alamos, sent candles out to their members, along with the words to Silent Night, and invited Read More

Sometimes Christmas Hurts: First United Methodist Church Of Los Alamos To Offer Blue Christmas Service Dec.  21

First United Methodist Church Of Los Alamos News:

The Christmas Season is not necessarily happy for everyone. The constant refrain on the radio and television about the happiness of the Christmas season, about getting together with family and friends, reminds many people of what they have lost or have never had.

The anguish of broken relationships, the insecurity of unemployment, the weariness of ill health, the pain of isolation, the gut-wrenching loss of a child, the loneliness of no longer having a beloved spouse to share each day – all these can contribute to a feeling of being alone, of “feeling Read More

Fr. Glenn: Shaking Off Sleep

By Fr. Glenn Jones:

So we’re slipping into the cooler season of late autumn and, soon to be, winter, which actually doesn’t begin officially until just before Christmas with the winter solstice (December 21), of course. While cold weather is, well … cold, most people very much look forward to the holiday seasons and the anticipation of being with family and friends, wonderful dinners and gift-giving—a time to renew acquaintances and relationships.

Relatedly, it’s a perfect time to renew the virtue of charity that we may have let languish by simple neglect or forgetfulness over the past year. Read More

By DAVID IZRAELEVITZ
Los Alamos

The Jewish holiday of Hanukkah began this past Sunday night, following the Jewish tradition that all holidays begin in the evening and continues the next eight days. It celebrates the successful revolt by rebels against a Syrian Greek monarchy around 165 BCE that was imposing Hellenistic culture on the Jewish people, including prohibiting the traditional practice of daily sacrifices in the Jerusalem Temple. When the rebels led by Judas Maccabee (or Judas “The Hammer”) succeeded in recapturing Jerusalem, a new Read More

Fr. Glenn: O Gracious Gratitude

By Fr. Glenn Jones:

I pray that all had a blessed and joyful Thanksgiving this year, especially after last year’s separation from loved ones due to the dangers of COVID. We now pray also that this new “omicron” variant does not become widespread, but rather will fizzle out quickly. God bless all of you and your families, and keep all of you safe.

But … back to Thanksgiving and its theme of gratitude.

St. Thomas Aquinas—along with St. Augustine, one of the greatest theologians and philosophers in Christian history—noted that gratitude is not only a courtesy, but a virtue and a moral obligation, for Read More
