Fr. Glenn: Days Gone By … And Work To Do

By Rev. Glenn Jones
Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church
Los Alamos

Seen on Facebook the other day: “Vote as you please … but please vote.” Good slogan.

It’s kind of a reminiscing weekend. First of all, we at Immaculate Heart of Mary are celebrating the fiftieth anniversary of the dedication of our current church building. Our “quinquagenarian” (yeah, I had to look that up) still looks pretty darn good for its age … and we’re thankful for whomever decided on brick architecture! Lots of interior changes over the years, but the outside is pretty much the same except for the addition of the Read More

Fr. Glenn: What Must I Do?

By Rev. Glenn Jones

A beautiful Gospel reading in the Catholic Mass this weekend—one of the most poignant encounters in the scriptures. A rich man in fine clothes throws himself at the feet of a wandering preacher and his dusty band, obviously having heard of, or witnessed, Jesus’ teaching and miracles. Full of enthusiasm, he calls out: “Good teacher!”… but Jesus replies: “Why do you call me good? No one is good but God alone.”

Jesus doesn’t want the man to get caught up in desperate hero-worship, as many do with charismatic leaders. We remember Read More

Fr. Glenn: Old Friends Long Gone

By Rev. Glenn Jones
Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church
Los Alamos

Received a text this morning about the passing of a good friend in my former parish. She was the deacon’s wife … always very kind and pleasant and generous … not to even mention that she made the best dang chile rellenos in the state! … along with just about anything else that graced the palates of her charges. Few failed to make a beeline to her cooking at parish functions, and many were the expressions of lamentation and woe when people recalled the closing of their restaurant years before.

She and the deacon lived just across Read More

Letter To The Editor: Catholic Church

By CAMILLE MORRISON
Los Alamos

I would like to make some comments on a column (link) by Father Glenn Jones that was published recently about an editorial (link) that was published Sept. 12, 2018 in the New Mexican.

His response to why women can’t be ordained priests was to quote an apostolic letter written by Pope John Paul II, which states, “Though women (for theological, not arbitrary, reasons) are not ordained, they remain invaluable nonetheless to the operation of parishes; hospitals, various ministries and to the global church.” Women have come a long way since that was published Read More

Fr. Glenn: The Tangled Web

By Rev. Glenn Jones

Find yourself bored? Need a little excitement? … an adrenaline rush? This week all you may need do is find a crowded room and shout “Kavanaugh!”… and dive for cover. Let the melee begin.

The Kavanaugh hearing of the Senate Judiciary Committee was quite the divisive spectacle last week. Now that issue has been passed on to the Senate, we are no doubt going to be afforded even more drama. One cannot but weary of it all … saddened as we watch the nation subjected to yet another trial of faith in its government. It seems that one Read More

Fr. Glenn: Right Judgment

By Rev. Glenn Jones
Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church
Los Alamos

“Do not judge by appearances, but judge with right judgment.” (John 7:24)

Boy, is THIS exhortation not applicable for our own day! How we are quick to judge others, often judging the good as bad … and vice versa, unfortunately.

It is often said that people have a “public face”—the façade maintained for the benefit of others … and of ourselves. In a negative illustration, the hypocritical scribes and Pharisees that Jesus excoriates in the Gospels are a prime example: “…hypocrites! for you are like whitewashed tombs, which outwardly

‘Learning To LOVE The Word Like Mary’ Women’s Breakfast Featuring Speaker Sonja Corbitt At IHM Oct. 6

Fr. Glenn: No, It’s Not Time…

By Rev. Glenn Jones
Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church

I’m hoping not to weary the reader by ceaseless pondering on the problems and issues experienced by the Catholic Church recently, but there was an editorial in the Santa Fe New Mexican the other day, which really required some response. Many of you may have seen that editorial, and it is my hope that the response submitted will clarify some of the teaching/positions of the Catholic faith if nothing else. But … as I have no idea whether the SFNM will actually publish that submission, it is offered to you below. Many readers will Read More

Fr. Glenn: Shining The Light

By Rev. Glenn Jones
Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church

You may have seen the stories in the state and national news this week of several states’ attorneys general in the U.S.—including ours in New Mexico—subpoenaing Catholic dioceses’ for all material pertaining to child abuse by clergy and staff. I’ve often wondered why such hasn’t been done long before now, and can’t deny that I’m glad to see it come about if it effects more assurance in the public. Not that I expect much, if any, new revelations in the Santa Fe Archdiocese; hopefully not in others, either.

But such scrutiny Read More

Fr. Glenn: The Critter Superhighway

As many of you know, it can be quite the mini-adventure living next to one of the canyons here in Los Alamos. Not only do we have the beauty of the pines, the oaks, the geology, the pleasing contours of the land, but we also are treated to a panoply of wildlife traipsing even through our yards.

Over at IHM I’ve seen all sorts of wildlife in my five years here—raccoons, bears, foxes, Pokemoners (just kidding! … but they DO seem to be most prevalent. When’s huntin’ season for them things up here, anyway? Well … most of ‘em are kind
