Saturday’s Holiday Arts and Craft Fair Offers Unique Shopping Opportunities

The Los Alamos Arts Council is presenting its annual Holiday Arts and Craft Fair 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 17.

The new venue for this year’s fair is the Crossroads Bible Church, Hwy 502, East Entry to Los Alamos, between Hilltop House Hotel and the Airport, south side of road.

Community members are invited to seize this opportunity to do all of their holiday shopping at this event, plus benefit an organization that brings to town numerous events throughout the year, such as Brown Bag Concerts, Kite Festival, Pumpkin Glow and Coffeehouse.

Plain Geometry: Amish Quilts explores the origins and aesthetics of a tradition that has evolved in a changing world.

Opening at the Museum of International Folk Art Sunday, March 3, 2013, 34 quilts will be on view from the museum’s collection and from local collectors.

In the mid nineties, Chris Ward attended a craft show in Owatonna, Minn. In one of the craft show booths she saw a fabulous beaded bracelet that she absolutely loved.

She wanted to give it to her mother, but was afraid that the colors weren’t quite right.

Instead of forgetting about the bracelet and buying her mom a gift card, she took a class with the woman who made the bracelet, and fell in love with beading.

After covering the lives of drug addicts and prostitutes in America and the struggle of Afghan rebels fighting the Soviets – including a stint as a prisoner of war – Santa Fe-based photojournalist Tony O’Brien turned to Christ in the Desert Monastery in Abiquiu to restore his spirit.

During the year he spent living with the Benedictine monks, they allowed him to document their daily activities and rituals, both contemplative and secular.
