Fr. Glenn: The Framing Of A Building

By Fr. Glenn Jones:

You might remember the burning of the cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris several years ago. Christian or no, virtually all viewed it a great tragedy—Christians for the destruction of the medieval center of Gallic worship, and non-Christians of the loss of an almost irreplaceable work of art and historical relevance. The storied loveliness of Notre Dame of old was virtually unrivaled.

But have you ever seen the pre-fire underlying framings supporting a cathedral or other structure? Often it’s a mishmash of timbers, wooden or metal supports, nailed and tied together, often Read More

“Jesus was political. Jesus was not partisan.” I so appreciate this understanding of who Jesus was the in world. How many of us function with the “rule” that you are not supposed to discuss politics, religion or sex in “polite” society?

Our faith community has been dealing with what is “polite” verses what is “civil” as we read and discus Read More

Sam LeDoux: Response To Española Mayor Vigil

By Sam LeDoux
Española City Councilor
Educator

When I heard the Mayor (Española Mayor John Ramon Vigil) wrote an article in response to my criticisms of his proposed plastic bag ban in the Los Alamos Daily Post, I was hoping to find a well-reasoned and researched disagreement where we could have a substantive conversation about something that would impact our entire community. Unfortunately, as usual, the mayor took criticism of a policy proposal personally and wrote an angry screed filled with personal attacks. anecdotal evidence, and emotional appeals. I usually don’t answer the Mayor’s Read More

By ALLEN MCQUISTON

Whether you’re a new or experienced driver, here are eight auto components that require regular maintenance to help you keep your vehicle in road-ready condition:

1. Wiper blades

Windshield wipers are an important component of safe driving. When it rains, sleets or snows ‒ or when bugs attack ‒ you must be able to clear your windshield so that your vision is unobstructed while driving.

Because wiper blades are made from rubber, they eventually wear out. Worn blades leave streaks that are difficult to see through, which can Read More

For The Record: Public Safety, Health, & Prosperity (Part 1)

By DENISE DERKACS
Candidate for Re-Election to County Council

As public servants, County Councilors are expected to follow a principle-based approach to informed decision-making. During my term on Council and as Council Chair, this has involved gathering as much information about an issue as possible, proactively engaging with constituents with differing opinions, considering all the facts and anticipating possible consequences of a decision, and being open to all options and solutions.

Members of the opposing political party have recently misrepresented my public statements, Read More

Weekly Fishing Report: Oct. 14, 2024

By GEORGE MORSE

Los Alamos Daily Post

Weather forecasts for this winter indicate a La Nina, a cooler Pacific current, affecting the weather. So far this has been the case with dry conditions and warmer-than-normal temperatures this fall. Streamflows are running well-below normal for this time of year. They make for good fishing, but the low water requires a stealthy approach and accurate casts. Fly fishing is often excellent this time of year.

The wild brown trout and brook trout are spawning this time of year. They will develop deeper colors and become more aggressive.

Kooshian: My First Vote

By CHARLES KOOSHIAN
Los Alamos

I cast an early vote Tuesday, along with much of the rest of the community, at the municipal building. The staff were friendly and competent, and I was in and out quickly after an entirely positive experience.

As I walked out, I thought back to the first time I voted. It was the presidential election of 1952, General Dwight D. Eisenhower versus Illinois Gov. Adlai E. Stevenson. Voting age back then was 21, my age. I had already registered.

I was in the US Air Force, stationed at Hamilton Air Force Base just north of San Francisco. As I was due to ship out to Korea soon, I was Read More

Early voting has started in New Mexico.

Before you head to the voting booth or fill out your mail-in ballot, your first stop should be nmvote.org, on the Secretary of State website. From that page you can obtain a sample ballot, which will show you everything that’s up for a vote in your district.

In this general election we are not only voting for president but also one United States senator, all our members of Congress, the entire state Legislature, both House and Senate, and about half of our elected local officials including Read More
