Yang: Follow-up On ‘Reluctant Leaders’ And ‘Followership’

Follow-up On “Reluctant Leaders” And “Followership”
By ELENA YANG
Los Alamos

First, a little humor (at someone’s small expense) on how data-driven decisions without context can be colossally stupid. Mr. Ben Bernanke’s recent application for refinancing his D.C. house was turned down.  Mr. Bernanke, you recall, was the former chairman of the Federal Reserve. According to the writer of the NY Times article (click here), the cause probably stemmed from Mr. Bernanke’s employment status, which changed from an 11-year salaried position to commission-based income (which includes $250,000 Read More

Aestheticians And Their Role In Skin Care
By JUNE ENGLISH, LE

For decades, cosmetic manufacturers have been bringing advanced skin care to consumers through professional aestheticians worldwide.

Aestheticians have always been on the cutting edge of research anddevelopment.

True skin care is much more than simply using the right products. Aestheticians have always maintained that keeping skin “young” has more to do with lifestyle than just keeping it young-looking through product use.

Only professional aestheticians can effectively deliver this message and Read More

Fitness Column: Should Women Weight Train?

Should Women Weight Train?
BY KENT PEGG

More and more women are entering the world of weight training to increase their level of health and fitness and look better.

The numerous benefits of strength training are no longer reserved for just men wanting to get big muscles. Women, however, have long been concerned with the possibility of getting overly muscular if they begin weight training.

The idea of adding weight, even if it’s muscle, runs counter to what many women want. So how can women who don’t want to get “big” incorporate weight lifting into their exercise program while still maintaining Read More

Yang: ‘Only If I Must Lead…’

By ELENA YANG
Los Alamos

Having read “level-5 leadership” (read here), then observed and heard stories about some leaders/managers, I occasionally wonder if those who are tapped for (or in some cases, conscripted into) leadership roles are more methodical, reflective, and deliberate in their managerial/leadership style, compared to those who aspired to manager/leader roles.

Since learning the concept of “reluctant” leadership (read here, here and here), I do agree that reluctant leaders seem to take the time … to listen, to ponder, to consider nuances, to take a longer and a wider Read More

Solo Traveler: When Travel Teaches
By SHERRY HARDAGE

Home again after a three-month trip to Europe, I missed the daily activity of exploring a new location, taking pictures of interesting stuff and then writing about it. Still, it was great to reconnect with old friends for chats about my travels.

A friend, Anna, asked if I’d learned anything over such a long trip. What a question! Of course I had learned about various artists, history, and culture, but what had struck me most strongly was that standing in a place Read More

Cinema Cindy Reviews ‘The Boxtrolls’

By CYNTHIA  Z. BIDDLECOMB

“The Boxtrolls” is marvelous in so many ways. This stop-action (and CG) animated feature takes you to the underground world of a community of trolls who wear boxes for clothing.

Each is named for the product advertised on his or her box. Thus, Fish and Shoe are the main trolls we get to know. And then, of course, there is Eggs.

Eggs (voiced by Isaac Hempstead Wright) is a 10-year-old human boy, thought to have been kidnapped by the boxtrolls as a baby. Stories of how monstrous the trolls are grew out of that misunderstanding. Fish has raised Eggs and taught him the trolls’ Read More
