How the Hen House Turns: Imprinting and Dominance

How the Hen House Turns: Imprinting and Dominance
Column by Carolyn A. (Cary) Neeper, Ph. D.
Los Alamos

If you raise young birds with motherly attention from an early age, they are likely to imprint on you and seek you out for comfort and guidance for the rest of their lives.

People working with Sandhill cranes lead them through the air in small aircraft to get them to migrate normally. After raising Americia, the Rhode Island red, and Gwendolyn, the Americauna, in the house (as I described in last week’s story), I soon realized they would always regard me as their mother hen.

Johnson: On The Central American Refugee Crisis

By DUSTIN JOHNSON
Los Alamos
(Currently doing an internship in Mongolia)

An increasing flow of migrants from Central America, seeking a reprieve from violence in their home countries, has become an increasingly divisive political issue in the US.

At least 57,000 children alone have been detained after crossing the border since last fall (source). Americans from across the political spectrum have called for various measures to address the crisis. Aug. 1. the House voted, largely along party lines, to fund measures to deport hundreds of thousands of immigrants without due process and boost

A Measure of Worth?

By KELLEY BAER, IBCLC, RLC, LCCE
Pajarito Lactation

True confession. I fed my babies formula – at least for a little while.

There. It’s out in the open. And guess what? I feel no shame.

It’s World Breastfeeding Week and the New Mexico Breastfeeding Task Force, Los Alamos Chapter, is highlighting community support for breastfeeding. However, sometimes highlighting an issue can trigger strong emotions.

World Breastfeeding Week, including the Ban the Bags campaign, is meant to protect and promote breastfeeding as a healthy choice for mom and Read More

Food on the Hill: Boston Cooler

This week’s recipe: Boston Cooler

I grew up in southeast Michigan and we would have these during the summer. They are very easy to make, but they are very good! I believe that they need to be made with ONLY Vernor’s soda. Luckily, Smith’s carries this. It has a special taste.

Ingredients (for one drink):

12 oz of Vernor’s ginger ale

3/4 of a pint of vanilla ice cream

Directons:

In a blender, miix together until smooth.

You can also make these like a root beer float if you don’t

Yang: If It Ain’t Broke…

If It Ain’t Broke…

By ELENA YANG
Los Alamos

If it ain’t broke … and Market Basket was not broken by any stretch of imagination. Market Basket is a 71-chain grocery store primarily serving the New England region.

In fact, the company is doing better than fine; it’s a billion-dollar enterprise with good profit margin. So, what did the board of directors try to fix? They removed the CEO, Arthur T. Demoulas (affectionately referred to as “ATD” by the employees), in an ouster maneuvered primarily by his archrival cousin, Arthur S. Demoulas. Seriously, it’s worth paying attention to family dynamics; Read More

Breastfeeding Support in Los Alamos

By GINA PETERSON, IBCLC
Los Alamos

For a relatively small town in New Mexico, Los Alamos has a surprising array of available breastfeeding support: a mother-to-mother support group, a private practice international board certified lactation consultant (IBCLC), an RN/IBCLC working out of two doctor’s offices, a certified lactation counselor (CLC), a government supported program for women with small children, a faith based breastfeeding organization, and the local hospital maternity ward.

La Leche League (LLL) of Los Alamos has been providing mother-to-mother breastfeeding

Cinema Cindy Reviews ‘And So It Goes’

By CYNTHIA BIDDLECOMB
Los Alamos

“And So It Goes” is another enjoyable Rob Reiner comedy in the genre of “As Good As It Gets” (1997, also written by Mark Andrus). It’s a mix of sweet with a lot of sour.

Michael Douglas is perfectly convincing as Oren Little, an irascible realtor widower who is disappointed with life and unable to exhibit the least bit of compassion for his fellow human beings (or, for that matter, for a Rottweiler).
