How the Hen House Turns: Raising Chicks In House

How the Hen House Turns: Raising Chicks In House
Column by Carolyn A. (Cary) Neeper, Ph. D.
Los Alamos

One spring, several years ago, my daughter and her husband, my granddaughter, and their niece, were coming to visit. I wanted them to experience new chicks, so I chose two at the feed store in time for their arrival.

The Hen House was ready for two more chickens, but it was too early for anyone to be setting. We had a fine time socializing the chicks. As usual,  the dogs assumed that they were supposed to guard them, as if they were new puppies in the pack. When the family members left, I had planned Read More

Cinema Cindy Reviews ‘Lucy’

By CYNTHIA BIDDLECOMB
Los Alamos

“Lucy,” by writer/director Luc Besson, is a contemporary era (rather than futuristic) Sci-Fi flick, immersed in the dark underworld of international drug running.

If you are sensitive to scenes involving blood, torture, execution by gun, or weirdly morphing ooze, don’t bother with this one. The film is rated “R” for strong violence, disturbing images and sexuality. I thought this was a very smart film. I liked it.

First off, the concept of the film is intriguing: what would happen if a human suddenly were able to increase the percentage of her brain to which she Read More

Organizations Rely On EVERYONE … Managers Included
By ELENA YANG
Los Alamos

Do you feel a larger purpose for, and transcendent meaning in, your work?  Do you manage to focus on your work at least 20 percent of the time during the day? Do you get recharged by inspiration every so often, as opposed to surviving on caffeine? Do you regard your manager to be supportive and caring? Do you experience trust at work? These are the key questions to gauge how happy/unhappy people in the workforce feel about their work (click here).

Positive answers would mean a happier workforce, which in turn enables Read More

Classical Music World: Answering Classical Concert Questions

By ANN MCLAUGHLIN
LACA Artistic Director

A few of weeks ago I tried to define and then slap down three reasons why people don’t come to classical music concerts. My message was that you don’t have to know anything about classical music to enjoy it, you don’t have to dress up and you don’t have to clean out your bank account to attend.

Some of you may take my advice and come to one of the Los Alamos Concert Association’s offerings. And, if you have never been to a classical concert, you may find yourself feeling like you are in a foreign land where the music is great but you don’t know the language Read More

Reflections On Hope And End-Of-Life Care

By CYNTHIA GOLDBLATT, LPCC, MSW, Ph.D.
Medical Social Worker and Volunteer Coordinator

Hospice is actually about life and helping dying persons to live as fully as they wish until their last moment of life rather than curing the patient’s disease.

There are ways to ease pain and make life better for people who are dying and for their loved ones who are caring for them. It is called Palliative Care. Palliative care means taking care of the whole person—body, mind, spirit—heart and soul– with the goal of alleviating symptoms when curative treatments are no longer working or the patient no Read More

How the Hen House Turns: Time to Go Sleeping

How the Hen House Turns:
Time to Go Sleeping
Column by Carolyn A. (Cary) Neeper, Ph. D.
Los Alamos

In winter, at night, a flashlight beam is enough to guide the little ducks to the warm Hen House. Lucy goose doesn’t object when they dash through the door and between her legs—probably because she raised them. Lucy gives the chicken some trouble in summer, but Gwendolyn has learned to avoid Lucy, and the hen hops up onto the roost when the goose is being bossy.

Lucy and Bobbi, the geese, also follow the beam of light into the Hen House for the night. They are the only ones who stay up outside until I get Read More

More Power For New Mexico

By REGINA WHEELER
CEO, Positive Energy Solar

New Mexico’s solar industry is ready to provide the state with clean power and jobs, while reducing the industrial pollution that is exacerbating droughts, causing health impacts and threatening the local economy. Now, our state’s abundant solar potential is becoming all the more important as the Obama Administration issues new public health protections limiting carbon pollution from power plants.

On July 29, hundreds of people will flock to Denver to attend a Western regional hearing on President Obama’s Clean Power Plan, our nation’s first Read More

Cinema Cindy Reviews ‘Jersey Boys’

By CYNTHIA BIDDLECOMB
Los Alamos

“Jersey Boys” is Clint Eastwood’s effort to put the hugely successful Broadway musical of the same name on the big screen.

It is the story of Frankie Valli and the original N.J., through their trying to survive in the big time. The music of the Four Seasons plays throughout the film, making it more than worth the price of admission.

The story is told by each of the four band members, cutting away at times to talk straight to the camera.
