This Week at the Reel Deal

Column by JIM O’DONNELL
Reel Deal Theater

We finally got a print of American Hustle which we will open Friday. It has a stellar cast and is getting great reviews, and has seven Golden Globe nominations. Do check out the trailer on one of the websites.

Guess what film is number two in the nation this week – Frozen. That’s kind of strange after it’s been out for six or seven weeks. Well I’m not going to argue with the numbers and we are still getting requests. So guess what? We’re bringing it back for a one week run this Friday.

For those of you who do not like 3D, you’re in luck. All shows will be 2D Read More

Slavery and Science Fiction

By TOM KING
Los Alamos

Science fiction usually tells tales of galactic daring-do as Humans engage in competition or conflict with mysterious Aliens met somewhere in the dark reaches of interstellar space. I love those kinds of stories by writers from the Classic era to the present. The idea of a hopeful interstellar future really appealed to me, a child of the Cold War and the threat of nuclear Armageddon. But then, why have four of my sci-fi novels dealt with the issue of far-future slavery of both Humans and Aliens?

My second novel Ancestor’s World, part of the StarBridge series by A.C. Crispin, Read More

How the Hen House Turns: Warming the Hen House

How the Hen House Turns: Warming the Hen House
Column by Carolyn A. (Cary) Neeper, Ph. D.

As the calendar creeps toward January, it’s time to worry about cold weather for the Hen House gang. I’ve probably mentioned this before, but it’s very scary when ducks shiver. It happens at 14 degrees F. You know it’s very cold, probably too cold for the hens’ combs to survive unfrozen. The birds need a warm refuge, especially at night.

Husband Don found a great solution, a safe thin oil heater, small enough to fit behind chicken wire and sit on a box away from the straw. It’s able to hold a low temp. I keep it at 40 degrees Read More

Solo Traveler: When Lies Lead to Tourism
By SHERRY HARDAGE

There is a beautiful little town in Sinaloa, Mexico, called El Fuerte, “The Fort.” Situated on top of the tallest bluff along the river, the fort overlooks a forested wildlife preserve on the other side.

It is an old city, the birthplace of Don Diego de la Vega, known as the hero, Zorro. His wealthy parents moved, shortly after his birth, to the Los Angeles area of California, which was still part of Mexico.

This Week at the Reel Deal

Column By JIM O’DONNELL
Reel Deal Theater

This week through Jan. 1, we are holding Walking with Dinosaurs 3D, Saving Mr. Banks, Anchorman 2 and The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug.

Jan. 2, we hope to open The Wolf of Wall Street and American Hustle. The studios have not totally confirmed these bookings for us but hopefully they’ll consider our small town, especially after our constant badgering.

Both of these films will be Academy Award considerations, so the studios are not releasing these films in one huge distribution. They’re sort of dribbling them out so folks are still talking about them Read More

How the Hen House Turns: Dogs and Christmas Trees

How the Hen House Turns: Dogs and Christmas Trees
Column by Carolyn A. (Cary) Neeper, Ph. D.

Dogs know it’s that time again. When the Christmas tree lights go on and the packages appear, they are eager to be in the living room. They sniff around everything – the candles, the ornaments, every package – and they know which one is theirs.

Even if we must be gone for the holiday, we set up a tree and have Christmas together when we can─DeeDee and Scooter and Don and I. But this year I made a mistake.

This Christmas DeeDee and Scooter were more alert to the promises wrapped in bright paper. Read More
