Couple Covering Country in Tandem for Charity

Great ideas are conjured up every day. Take Los Alamos residents Leanne Smith and her husband, David, who came up with a plan to bike from Portland, Maine to Portland, Ore. for charity.

As of Sunday, the two were pedaling on their tandem bicycle through Wisconsin. Their journey began Aug. 2 and is expected to cover 3,000 miles in eight weeks.

The Smiths are raising money to repair a broken well in a community in Nicaragua. They invite people to sponsor one mile of their journey for $1. The proceeds Read More

Wednesday FAN Club at Former Scout Lodge

The Los Alamos Chamber of Commerce August FAN Club is set for 5:30-7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 29.

This is a great opportunity to see the site where the Los Alamos Visiting Nurses organization will be building Los Alamos’ first-ever hospice, and tour one of the more historic buildings in Los Alamos at the same time, in the former Scout Lodge, 2202 Canyon Road.

The driveway is just to the east of the Jewish Center and will be well marked for the occasion.

Community Invited to Tie Teal Ribbons Event

OVARIAN CANCER TOGETHER News:

In memory of Cheri Host, Kathy Aikin and Emmy Hopson, the community is invited at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 1 to tie teal ribbons to the trees at Ashley Pond.

September is Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month and Saturday’s event is being held to raise awareness and not lose any more women in the community to the disease.

Even in its early stages ovarian cancer has symptoms. Research indicates that 95 percent of women with ovarian cancer had symptoms and 90 percent of women experienced symptoms with early-stage ovarian cancer.

Espanola YMCA Teen Center Issues Call for Help

On Saturday Aug. 4, the Espanola YMCA Teen Center participated in what some are calling the largest cultural display of Northern New Mexico: The inaugural Mainstreet Showdown Lowrider and Custom Bicycle show.

This event was powered by Cultura Promotions, The City of Española and the community therein.

PEEC Offers New Afterschool Nature Clubs

PEEC News:

PEEC is offering two new clubs for kids in grades kindergarten through third:

  • Nature Detectives for grades K-1; and
  • Outdoor Explorers for grades 2-3. 

The clubs are 3:45-5:15 p.m. starting Tuesday, Sept. 4 and run every Tuesday through Nov. 27. Angelique Harshman and Beth Cortright will teach the clubs.

PEEC’s Nature Clubs are a great way to help children connect with the outdoors. Members will investigate local animals and plants, and connect with the wild side of the Pajarito Plateau through a variety of activities.  Read More

W.O.L.F. Comes to PEEC

Elke Duerr of the Web of Life Foundation comes to PEEC for an interactive presentation about wolves in the southwest at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 30.

This presentation will be suitable for all ages, and will include hands-on activities and documentary film footage. The talk is free and open to the public.

Duerr will provide facts about wolves in New Mexico, and hands-on experiences from her “Wolf Trunk.”

The audience will be able to see wolf tracks and fur, and learn about how researchers radio collar a wolf to track its movements.
