The Family YMCA joins national effort to provide 7 million meals to children this summer, as part of Walmart’s Summer Giving Campaign

When the school year ends, so does free meals for the millions of children in low-income households who depend on them most. This summer the Española YMCA Teen Center is providing free nutritious meals to youth of all ages beginning Monday, June 4. Transit of Venus Viewing Options for Tuesday

From 4 to sunset, Tuesday June 5, Los Alamos will be treated to a rare “transit of Venus” when the planet comes so precisely between the sun and the earth that its image can be seen crossing the solar disk.

Venus is small enough that a telescope (equipped with a special filter to reduce brightness) will be needed. 

PEEC has such a telescope and will be showing the transit to anyone interested.

A transit of Venus happens only four times every 243 years. However,, the spacing between each occurrence is very uneven.

On Tuesday, June 5th, PEEC’s Summer Family Evenings program will kick off with a Taxidermy Museum with animals from Yukon Wildlife Studio.  Visitors are welcome to drop in any time between 6:30 and 8:30.  The event is free for PEEC members, and just $5 per family for non-members at the door.

ChamberFest Set for Saturday, June 9

The second weekend in June features ChamberFest, a community event showcasing Chamber of Commerce member merchants, businesses and organizations.

Self Help, Inc. Launches 2-1-1

Self Help, Inc., a Los Alamos non-profit organization, plans a June 1 launch for 2-1-1, an online and telephone information and referral service.

The service aims to connect people searching for help and social service agencies around Rio Arriba, Taos and Los Alamos counties with the appropriate agency.

The 2-1-1 service is sponsored and supported by United Way of Northern New Mexico and links to other United Way agency-sponsored 2-1-1 centers throughout the country.

Summerfest and Pajarito Punishment at Pajarito Mountain this Weekend

Celebrate the start of the summer season at Pajarito Mountain Saturday June 2.

The New Mexico Brewers Festival is noon to 5 p.m., featuring 15 New Mexico microbrewers and live music 1-5 p.m. with the Blue Hornets.

Lifts will run 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. for hiking and biking.

Atomic City Transit is providing free shuttles 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.running every 30 minutes from Sullivan Field at Los Alamos High School.

H.E.L.P. Provides Rides to Medical Appointments

The Los Alamos Lions Club created a program that has become a lifeline to local residents without a way to get to their medical appointments.

H.E.L.P. is filled with volunteers who drive Los Alamos residents to medical appointments at Los Alamos Medical Center as well as to doctor offices throughout the County, in Espanola, Santa Fe and all the way to Albuquerque.

Renovations Close 37th Street Play Lot

The 37th Street Play Lot near Villa Street is closed for the next two weeks so that the Los Alamos County’s contractor, LA Landscaping & More, can make renovations to the park.

Renovations include:

  • remove the sand safety zone material in the designated play areas and replace with engineered wood fiber, bringing the safety/fall zone into compliance
  • add a merry-go-around  with fall/safety zone material and borders (similar to the one at Community Park or North Mesa Park)
