Golf Course Dedication Ceremony Honors Ed Griggs

All the carts are loaded and ready to go at the start of the tournament. At the go signal everyone goes dashing off to their assigned tee – the official start is called a “shotgun” start, which is now a horn blast. The Ed Griggs Memorial Strong Kids Classic held at the Los Alamos Golf Course Saturday honors noted golfer Ed Griggs who passed away last year. He played his final round of golf in the Strong Kids Classic tournament last year. It is the second major fundraiser of the year for the Los Alamos Family YMCA. There were 28 foursome teams entered in the best ball scramble tournament.

Caldera Work Party Helps Calves Stay with Herd

A work party coming from the visitor center and another from the highway are separated by elk herd as Saturday’s fence tear-down endeavor got underway at the Valle Caldera National Preserve. Forty people from Los Alamos, Santa Fe, Taos and Albuquerque with organizations including Pajarito Environmental Education Center (PEEC), Sierra Club, Wild Earth Guardians and the New Mexico Environment Department joined Caldera Chief Scientist Bob Parmenter to remove fences built for sheep in the 1930s. PEEC Offers Free Hike to Guaje Overlook

Today, June 10, Paul Arendt will lead a hike for PEEC to the Guaje Overlook. Hikers will meet at PEEC at 9 a.m. to carpool to the ski area for the hike of about 8 miles round-trip. 

Participants should bring a lunch and water, and dogs are welcome.

The Guaje Overlook hike goes through the beautiful Cañada Bonita area and beyond, offering views into the Valle De Los Posos, as well as pleasant, wooded trails.

Mae T. Cagliostro, 68, a resident of Los Alamos passed away on June 6, 2012 after bravely battling leukemia for 6 years. She passed away peacefully in her sleep surrounded by her loved ones. Mae’s husband, Dominic was always by her side, caring for her during her battle with leukemia.  Mae was a hero and inspiration to all who knew her. Mae was a wonderful, loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She was a kind, loving, compassionate and caring person who will be missed by all who knew her. The Leadership Los Alamos organization is taking the year off to update its program.

Leadership Los Alamos has operated for more than 10 years and things have changed, Chair-elect Mike Wismer said. The community, the economy has evolved, he said, and Leadership Los Alamos is looking at possibly retooling.

The Scouts try their skill on the rope course under the watchful eye of adult volunteers. There were 137 Cub Scouts at the camp Wednesday. The camp runs through today and is an annual event held for about the last 25 years. The Los Alamos Cooperative Market will host its inaugural Bike Swap from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday June 10.

Los Alamos Singletrack Association (LASA), an International Mountain Biking Association affiliated club is sponsoring the event.

The Bike Swap is an opportunity for bicycle enthusiasts to sell and buy quality used (and new) bicycles, parts and accessories.
