Letter to the Editor: Friends of the Shelter Say Thank You Los Alamos!

On Sunday, April 7, more than 300 members of our community shared their morning at the Posse Lodge for an all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast to benefit Friends of the Shelter.

They also were treated to a doggy kissing booth for smooches and handshakes.

Many thanks to Peggy Sullivan and her husband for providing the booth and such an enthusiastic crew of canines!

Free Program to Manage Chronic Disease Offered

The Family YMCA in conjunction with the Los Alamos Retired and Senior Organization and the Los Alamos Cooperative Extension Service is offering a series of community-based workshops to help those with chronic conditions such as diabetes, arthritis, high blood pressure, chronic pain, anxiety, heart disease and more.

Local GOP County Convention April 18

GOP News:

The Republican Party of Los Alamos will elect its 2013-14 County Central Committee and officers April 18 at the Jeannette O. Wallace Hall, room 505, at UNM-LA, 400 University Dr.

The County Contingent to the Republican Party of New Mexico Central Committee also will be elected at this meeting.

Registration opens at 6:30 p.m. and closes at 7 p.m., and Republicans registered in the County of Los Alamos are encouraged to attend.

The meeting of the 2011-2012 Central Committee begins at 7 p.m., followed by Ward Caucuses and the County Convention.

Pet of the Week: Tabby the Maine Coon

SHELTER News:

Tabby is a LARGE, strikingly handsome, very friendly Maine coon cross neutered male about 8 years old.

A former shelter resident who has been in an adoptive home until the family had to move, Tabby is reported to love adults, gentle children, cats and gentle dogs.

He just had a veterinary update, then settled right back into the common room at the shelter. He even brought a shy kitty out of hiding to share the fun.

Tabby has a distinctive orange mustache. He would like his long, flowing coat brushed daily.

Public Works Projects:

Eastern Area 2 Concrete, Paving & Utility Project – Phase 2

Monday, April 15, RMCI Inc. will begin milling Canyon Road between 9th Street and 15th Street. During milling operations, expect flagging operations with minimal delays. Please do not park vehicles on this section of Canyon Road during the milling operations.  

Once milling is complete, RMCI will pothole on Canyon Road in order to locate existing utilities; expect flagging operations with minimal delays.

County Releases Muni Building Move-In Schedule

COUNTY News:

The new Municipal Building is nearly completed and the County expects building occupancy permits within the week.

The move schedule has been finalized for staff to start moving into the new building in May.

County staff are working hard as they prepare to move to minimize disruptions to customer service and keep services up and running.

Los Alamos County has directed its branding consultant to change the settings on its community survey — https:////www.surveymonkey.com/s/LosAlamosCountyNM — issued April 9 to allow multiple people to submit responses using the same computer. 

This change was made based on feedback from recipients regarding potential issues associated with limiting responses to one per IP (Internet Protocol) address—the numerical label assigned to each device participating in a computer network.

A Red Flag Warning is issued by National Weather Service (NWS) to call attention to critical weather conditions that may result in extreme fire behavior.

Critical weather conditions include: sustained winds, low relative humidity, high temperatures and high fire danger. A combination of any of these conditions must occur simultaneously for three or more hours across any portion of a fire weather zone.
