Letter to the Editor: Frustrated With Transportation-Related Issues

I have lived in Los Alamos County (LAC) for 34 years and just completed a term as a member of LAC’s Transportation Board, so I have considerable interest in, and considerable frustration with, LAC transportation-related issues.
 
In my opinion, the current kerfuffle over the “N.M. 502-Trinity Drive Transportation Improvement Project” is the result of yet the latest in a long list of mismanaged LAC road and street projects over the past several years as summarized below:

Letter to the Editor: On Hyping Roundabouts

Recently, Councilor Kristin Henderson stated (Los Alamos Daily Post Feb. 23) that “And yes, the federal and state highway people are all good with a roundabout. New Mexico just put one in on the bypass.”

There has been no roundabout put on the N.M. 599 bypass. The roundabouts are on a low-traffic, feeder road on either side of the bypass and not on N.M. 599 itself.

And while it is considering the County’s desire to have a roundabout at Central Avenue, NMDOT has long been on-record favoring a signalized intersection there.

Ashley Pond Park ADA Ramp Excavation Begins Today Near Central Avenue and Bathtub Row

As part of the Ashley Pond Park improvements project, County Parks crews will begin excavation for the ADA ramp near the intersection of Central Avenue and Bathtub Row today, March 4.

Once more the county is injecting itself into an area were they have no business – the old canard that we need more government-sponsored affordable housing to assure our economic prosperity.
