School Board Hears Variety of Topics

The Los Alamos School Board got its first look at budget estimates for fiscal years 2015-2019 at a Board Work Session Thursday at Los Alamos Middle School. The figures were part of the Strategic Plan Report presented by Superintendent Gene Schmidt. Projections were made for declining student enrollment of two, three and five percent. This year, enrollment declined by nine students compared to this time last year. The Board will be looking at ways to address budget shortfalls in the coming weeks.

Call for Volunteer Judges! Hilltalkers Request Community Support for Tournament

The Los Alamos Hilltalkers Speech and Debate Team’s annual invitational tournament is quickly approaching and will be held Friday, Nov. 1 and Saturday, Nov. 2 at Los Alamos High School.

As host team, the Hilltalkers provide all of the organizational support for this major event. The team is still in need of volunteer judges from the community, especially for Saturday afternoon’s competitive sessions. Judges evaluate and score rounds of speech and debate events.

The University of New Mexico, Department of Mathematics and Statistics, and the PNM Foundation have announced the UNM-PNM Statewide Mathematics Contest for the 2013-2014 school year.

The goal of the contest is to promote mathematical investigation, enhance problem-solving skills, and recognize and honor outstanding mathematics achievement among students in New Mexico.

Expert to Speak on Fires in Valles Caldera

Rebecca Oertel of the Valles Caldera National Preserve, will give a free presentation at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 29 at PEEC. The topic of her talk is the effects of the Las Conchas and Thompson Ridge fires, as well as prescribed burns, on the Valle lands.

The talk will cover the findings of the Valles’ pre- and post-fire monitoring of vegetation, soils, invertebrates, and vertebrate wildlife in both terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. It will also compare the results of ‘fire season’ summer wildfires to ‘cool season’ autumn prescribed fires.
