Michele Altherr of Los Alamos had no idea how PEEC would change her life when she attended a meeting at Fuller Lodge in the fall of 1999, calling for anyone interested in having a nature center in Los Alamos.

Altherr recalled that there was a good turn out at the meeting and much interest when there was a call for volunteers. Governor Joins New Mexico Kindergarteners in World Record Reading Attempt

STATE news:

Santa Fe – Gov. Susana Martinez will join students in Santa Fe today to participate in the national “Read for the Record” Event.

Martinez and the students will join millions of others in reading the same book, on the same day to promote literacy and attempt to break the current world record.

For the last two years, Martinez and students in New Mexico have participated in breaking the world record for adults reading to children in a single day. Read More

Monday kicked off this week’s Homecoming events including the annual bonfire.

 

Los Alamos Youth Leadership (LAYL) hosted the hotly popular event in the Sullivan Field parking lot Monday evening.

 

The Los Alamos Fire Department kept everything cool as the LAHS football team, students, teachers, coaches and community members roasted s’mores, listened to music and participated in Topper spirit.

NM Academic Librarians Hold Ribbon Cutting in Los Alamos

NMCAL News:

The New Mexico Consortium of Academic Libraries (NMCAL) will hold a ribbon cutting ceremony at Mesa Public Library in Los Alamos at 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 17 to celebrate an initiative five years in the making.

UNM-LA Students to Attend Accelerate Workshop at UNM-Taos

On Friday, Oct. 4, 14 students from the UNM-LA Accelerate Technical Training program will attend a job placement workshop hosted by the University of New Mexico-Taos. UNM-Los Alamos Class Teaches Stress Management Techniques

UNM-LA News:

The University of New Mexico-Los Alamos Community Education program will offer a four-week class in stress management. The class, taught by UNM-LA Professor Victoria Erhart, focuses on physical, mental and emotional stress and the techniques that can be used to mitigate and lower each of these.

An organization in Arizona, the Southwest Environmental Information Network (SEINet), has been gathering the most important southwest databases into a single website.

SEINet recently accepted the Jemez Mountain Herbarium, which is housed by the Pajarito Environmental Education Center (PEEC), and has about 3,000 species from Los Alamos County and the Jemez Mountains. Anyone in the world can query SEINet.
