The Los Alamos School Board will hold a Special School Board Meeting at 4 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 10 at the District Office, 2101 Trinity Dr., Suite V.

The agenda items for the Special School Board Meeting will be for the Board to receive construction updates on Los Alamos Middle School and Aspen Elementary School and take action as needed. Read More

I’m very concerned about the effect of the government shutdown on education. Some of us look back on school and remember our favorite teacher, but today’s youth will look back with fond memories of their favorite bureaucrats, who tragically today are not at work; they’re out on their boats.

UNM-LA Composition Cinema Lecture Series Continues With Documentary Home

The University of New Mexico-Los Alamos (UNM-LA) will present the documentary Home, Oct. 10 as the third feature in the Composition Cinema I: A Film and Lecture Series, which will run through Nov. 14.

The visually stunning film by French photographer and environmentalist, Yann Arthus-Bertrand, is shot almost entirely from an aerial perspective and makes a compelling case that man has neglected the mystery and miracle of life on earth and that he has plundered the planet, disturbing the delicate balance that sustains so much of the earth’s life.

GED Orientation Meeting Changed to Oct. 17

UNM-LA News:

The previously scheduled UNM-Los Alamos GED Orientation meeting has been changed to 1 p.m., Oct. 17 in the Adult Learning Center, Room B17. The meeting was formerly scheduled for Oct. 16.

Attendance at the orientation is mandatory because the staff walks the students through the enrollment process and administers pretests.

Classwork for the next session will begin Oct. 22.

School Board Meets Tuesday

The Los Alamos School Board will hold a regular School Board Meeting at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 8 at the Los Alamos High School Topper Speech Theater.

A briefing on the new New Mexico Teacher Evaluation System by Gerry Washburn and Pam Miller is on the agenda, along with other matters.

The agenda for the meeting will be posted at the district office the Thursday before the meeting. If special accommodations are required, notify the secretary to the superintendent 72 hours before the meeting at 505-663-2230. Read More

2014 National Merit Scholarship Program Commends Eight Los Alamos Students For Exceptional Academic Promise

Eight Los Alamos High School students have been named Commended Students in the 2014 National Merit Scholarship Program:

  • Charlotte Berg;
  • Matthew Davenport;
  • Justine Dombrowski;
  • Victoria Hypes; Ariel Koh;
  • Charles Mielke; Nathan Phillps; and
  • Jing Xie. 

A letter of Commendation from the school and National Scholarship Corporation (NMSC), which conducts the program, will be presented by the principal to these scholastically talented seniors.

Public Forum on Local Response to Climate Change Oct. 8 at SFCC
