It is with great pleasure that Los Alamos Public Schools announces that Bradford W. Parker has accepted the position of Principal at Barranca Mesa Elementary School.
Andrea Determan, fourth grade teacher and Committee Chair of the interview committee noted that, “We were impressed with his qualifications and experience and are excited and happy to have him become a member of our school community.”

The Los Alamos School Board has scheduled an Executive Session at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, June 27 at the Los Alamos High School Athletic Conference Room to discuss a specific personnel issue per Section 10-15-1-H(2) of the Open Meetings Act.
The Board has scheduled a work session at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, June 27 in the Los Alamos High School Speech Theater.

NM Delegation Introduces Bill to Improve Tribal Education

WASHINGTON– Friday, June 14, U.S. Senators Tom Udall and Martin Heinrich, along with Reps. Ben Ray Luján, Michelle Lujan Grisham, and Steve Pearce announced they have introduced legislation to improve tribal education and preserve Native American language in schools.
Graduation rates for American Indians and Alaska Natives are less than 50 percent – lower than the graduation rates for all other ethnic groups in the United States. UNM-LA Launches Mil Levy Campaign Wednesday

UNM-LA News:
The University of New Mexico-Los Alamos will kick off a campaign Wednesday, June 19, asking for voter support of a mil levy special election set for Sept. 17.
A successful election will afford financial stability and sustainability of programs and services in light of diminishing state funding.
Wednesday’s two-part event will take place on the UNM-LA campus and will consist of a roundtable discussion with elected officials at 11:00 a.m. in room 505, Wallace Hall, followed at noon by a public luncheon in the Student Center Café.

Matteson’s winning essay was written about the book “Think Big” authored by Dr. Ben Carson. In this book, Carson tells the story of being pushed by his mother to write weekly book reports and how this exercise eventually nurtured his enchantment for medical science.

UNM-LA and LAPS Team Up for Hazardous Waste Disposal
UNM-LA News:
The University of New Mexico-Los Alamos (UNM-LA) and Los Alamos Public Schools will be working together June 18–20, to properly dispose of hazardous waste generated in their science and art classes.
The two schools have contracted with PSC, a Texas based company who specializes in the packaging, transportation and disposal of hazardous materials. The material being collected from both campuses is the type, which cannot be discarded by either pouring down the drain or placing in the trash.
