2013 SBA Scores Show Record Gains in High School Reading Proficiency

BERNALILLO – Gov. Susana Martinez announced Friday the results of the latest Standards Based Assessment (NMSBA), administered earlier this year to New Mexico students in 3rd through 8th grades, as well as 10th and 11th grades.

 

New Mexico’s 11th grade class posted impressive gains in reading proficiency, increasing proficiency rates by 9.9 percentage points over 2012 – to the highest level seen since the NMSBA began in 2007. SANTA FE – Gov. Susana Martinez, together with Public Education Secretary Hanna Skandera will present the results of the 2013 New Mexico Standards Based Assessment (NMSBA)  at 12:30 p.m. today.

Students in grades 3rd through 8th, as well as high school sophomores and juniors take the NMSBA every spring and results are used to determine if students are on grade level in core subject areas.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Rep. Ben Ray Luján of New Mexico’s Third District voted today to bring up legislation to address the increase in interest rates on student loans that is scheduled to occur on July 1.

Aspen Elementary Portable Campus on the Move

The first of four classroom portables destined for Aspen Elementary School arrived in Los Alamos Tuesday.

A second portable will arrive from Clovis today, a third Friday and the fourth on Monday. The portables will be dropped off at the high school parking lot until next Monday or Tuesday when all four will be moved to the Aspen campus.

Garden Signs and Bird Feeders Vandalized at Mountain School

The Mountain Elementary School PTA has announced that garden signs and bird feeders at the school were vandalized over the weekend of June 22-23.

The PTO would like to encourage the community to keep a watchful eye out and report and any vandalism to the Mountain School principal or the Los Alamos Police Department.

The PTA will replace the classroom garden signs and feeders when school resumes in August. The gardens are funded by a grant from the LAPS Foundation and Mountain School PTA. Read More

Los Alamos Kiwanis Honors Local Student Jordan Ahlers

The Kiwanis Club of Los Alamos has kicked off its annual recognition of local students selected to recieve educational scholarships. Jordan Ahlers graduated from Los Alamos High School and was honored at a recent Kiwanis meeting. She will attend Hillsdale College in Michigan in the fall to study pre-law or engineering.
