Family Honors Loved One Through Donations to Youth Activity Center

James and Darlene Potter with a new air hockey table donated by Marie Koss Potter Warsaw in memory of her grandson, Gregory James Potter, who had worked at the Los Alamos Youth Activity Center and was very popular with the children. There are two Youth Activity Centers, one in Los Alamos on the east side of Ashley Pond and one in White Rock near Rocket Park. The programming focus of the Youth Activity Centers is on youth resiliency, a safe, supervised environment and positive adult role models. Jemez Valley artist Betsie Miller-Kusz was the guest speaker at an induction ceremony Dec. 7 for 34 new Los Alamos High School members of the National Art Honor Society.

Miller-Kusz was born in Los Alamos and lived and painted in San Francisco, Calif., for many years. She has exhibited internationally and painted many public murals.

Duane Smith Auditorium at Los Alamos High School is the venue for two arts department events Monday, Dec. 17.

The closing reception for a collection of fall semester artwork by visual arts students is slated from 3:30 p.m. in the foyer area and at 7 p.m., the 2012 Winter Dance show begins.

Many Events Have Been Canceled

Residents should call ahead before venturing out to any meetings or events today and tomorrow because there have been many cancelations around the community.
 
The Los Alamos High School Athletics Department issued the following cancelations:
  • High school wrestling at Capital canceled on Saturday.
  • Mid school wrestling canceled at Las Vegas on Saturday.
  • Boys varsity basketball will not play today or tomorrow in Academy tournament.
  • Girls spent the night and will play tomorrow.
  • Mid school girls basketball tournament is canceled today and tomorrow.

Students Register to Vote at LAHS

Robert Van Lysell celebrated his 18th birthday Thursday by registering to vote with assistance from the Los Alamos League of Women Voters. The League was helping students at Los Alamos High School register in time to vote in next month’s school bond election. Eligible voters include those who will be 18 on or before Jan 29, 2013. Any other student at LAHS who would like to register can go to the office and request that someone come to the school or s/he can go to the County Clerk’s Office (portable suite D)  in the parking lot by the Justice Center to register.
