Mountain Lion Expert Comes to PEEC

Internationally recognized cougar expert Ken Logan of the Colorado Parks and Wildlife division will talk at 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 12 at PEEC about his years of research on these beautiful and elusive animals. The talk is free and open to the public.

The focus of Logan’s career has been on the science of the cougar, and on putting that scientific information into a format that will inform decision makers and citizens as they consider mountain lion management and conservation.

School Board Holding Special Meeting at Coffee Booth

The Los Alamos School Board has scheduled a Special School Board meeting at 7:30 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 2 at the Coffee Booth to review school board policies.

Gadbois Selected to Create Mural at UNM-Los Alamos

The University of New Mexico-Los Alamos has commissioned Santa Fe artist Nick Gadbois to create a work of art for the UNM-LA campus.

The Local Selection Committee at UNM-LA sought to commission a work that would connect the campus and the Los Alamos community as well as conceptually relate to science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

Students entering fourth through twelveth grade were on the UNM-LA campus during the week of July 23-27 for “University Experience,” a science and technology program that gave students the opportunity to learn about robotics, rocketry, forensics, biology, alternative energy, game design and cyber-security. Teachers Union Delegates at National Convention Nix High Stakes Testing

DETROIT — The American Federation of Teachers 2012 National Convention in Detroit drew more than 3,000 delegates from across the country.

The delegates represented 1.5 million members including preK-12 teachers; paraprofessionals and school-related personnel; higher education faculty and professional staff; early childhood educators; federal, state and local government employees; and nurses and other healthcare professionals.

Kiwanis awarded an educational scholarship to Los Alamos High School graduate Erin Burr Tuesday. From left, Thomas Burr, Lynn Finnegan, Burr, and Kiwanis Second Vice President Karen Kendall. Burr will attend Colorado State University in Fort Collins this fall to study dance and health with a focus on exercise science.
