Los Alamos County Summer Concert Series Celebrating 25 Years!

The upcoming Los Alamos County Summer Concert Series will mark 25 years of rockin Los Alamos. The 2014 Series will start May 16 at Overlook Park with Zoe Muth and the Lost High Rollers.

On May 23, we’ll have our first concert on the new stage at the beautifully remodeled Ashley Pond. A number of dates have been finalized but I’m still working on this year’s schedule.

Confirmed acts as of Friday night:

In general,  I thought the 86th Academy Awards went well. I think everyone who won a golden statue deserved it although I was disappointed that American Hustle, The Wolf of Wall Street and August:Osage County went home empty handed.

“Philomena” was honored by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences with nominations for Best Picture of 2013, Actress in a Leading Role, Original Score and Adapted Screenplay and I heartily agree with these nominations.

It is a fine film, based on a true story. Judy Dench is wonderful in the title role.

The story puts an aging, faithful, Irish Catholic woman, a retired nurse, who wants to find her son, into the hands of a jaded, self-professed atheistic, famous journalist who is after her story. The two play off each other

First off, I must say that the one category I felt the most passion about this year was Best Original Screenplay and I am ecstatic the Academy felt as I did, that “Her” was worthy of that award.

This fine screenplay won for subtly exploring human intimacy, how we fall in love, whether artificial intelligence could ever be a substitute for another human being, and showing a lonely soul learning to open his heart. The award-winning Israeli documentary film, Precious Life, is coming to the  Reel Deal Theater for a one-time screening at 4 p.m. Sunday, March 9.

Precious Life follows the real-life story of a Palestinian baby with a rare immune deficiency disorder, and the Israeli doctor who hopes to save the baby’s life. It is an up-close and personal story set against the larger backdrop of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Los Alamos Arts Council’s Brown Bag Performance Series continues at noon, Wednesday at Fuller Lodge with Franz Schubert–Piano Quintet in A major, D.667: Allegro vivace, Andante, Scherzo, Tema, Finale.
