On September 11, 2001, 19 militants associated with the Islamic extremist group al Qaeda hijacked four airplanes and carried out suicide attacks against targets in the United States. Two of the planes were flown into the twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, a third plane hit the Pentagon just outside Washington, D.C., and the fourth plane crashed in a field in Shanksville, Penn. Medio Fire Continues To Push Into 2011 Pacheco Fire Scar

The Medio Fire continues to burn dead and down timber in the northeast corner, pushing into the fire scar from the 2011 Pacheco Fire.

Fire activity added 50 acres to its 3,948 acre footprint and continues to produce a fair amount of smoke.

Medio Fire Burns 3,773 Acres, 90 Percent Contained

This morning the Southwest Area Type 2 Incident Management Team 4 transferred command of the Medio Fire on the Rio en Medio Trail in the Española Ranger District back to the Santa Fe National Forest, led by Type 4 Incident Commander John Armstrong.

Aerial observation confirms that pockets of fuel in the interior continue to burn, putting out visible smoke but with limited potential to spread. Containment lines around the fire’s perimeter continue to hold.

As a result of successful firefighting efforts, the 3,721 acre Medio Fire activity is winding down as suppression repair activities continue around the fire perimeter.

The fire, now 59 percent contained, was sparked by lightning Aug. 17 on Rio en Medio Trail on the  Española Ranger District in Santa Fe National Forest.

Burnout Operations Secure Western Edge Of Medio Fire

Crews worked into the night to successfully complete burnout operations on the western edge of the Medio Fire.

These efforts aimed to eliminate the remaining fuel between the main body of the fire and the handline previously constructed by firefighters.

The fire, sparked by lightning Aug. 17, has consumed 3,681 acres on the Rio en Medio Trail in the Española Ranger District and is 59 percent contained.

Today, firefighters will patrol the containment lines, mop up any hot spots, and continue suppression repair efforts. An initial attack crew stands ready to suppress any new fire starts. Read More

Smoke From Medio Fire May Increase As Burnouts Resume

Today, firefighters are working together to determine the best conditions, timing and location to bring the fire to the handline on the western side of the Medio Fire.

Smoke may become increasingly visible as firefighters attempt to resume these critical burnout operations.

Lightning sparked the Medio Fire Aug. 17 on the Rio en Medio Trail in the Española Ranger District of the Santa Fe National Forest, about 7 miles north of Santa Fe. The fire is burning dry mixed conifer, ponderosa pine and has consumed 3,453 acres and is 55 percent contained with 255 personnel on the job.
