BLM To Open San Pedro For Fuelwood Harvest

TAOS ― The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) announced today that it will conduct a hazardous fuels reduction project in the San Pedro area in order to minimize heavy fuels that are optimal for fuelwood use.
 
To ensure public safety during removal of fuelwood, this area will be closed to shooting Oct. 18-31. Fuelwood permits will be available for fuelwood removal.  
 
The San Pedro fuels reduction project is located on BLM lands on the south side of NM Highway 344, approximately 1 mile east of the intersection of NM Highway 14 and NM Highway 344.

Stable Canyon Prescribed Burn Planned For Weekend

SANTA FE ― Fire managers on the Jemez Ranger District of the Santa Fe National Forest (SFNF) are planning to implement the previously announced Stable Canyon prescribed burn on the Jemez Ranger District as early as Saturday if conditions, including fuel moisture levels, air quality and forecasted weather, remain favorable.
 
Crews will use hand and aerial ignitions to treat the 1,595-acre Stable Canyon unit east of Porter Landing. Depending on conditions, it may take up to three days to complete operations on Stable Canyon.

SFNF Plans Multiple Prescribed Burns This Fall

SANTA FE – Fire managers on the Santa Fe National Forest (SFNF) are planning to take advantage of favorable conditions this fall to conduct prescribed burns across the forest to remove hazardous fuels, improve wildlife habitat, and create healthier, more resilient forest and watershed ecosystems.

Depending on conditions, including fuel moisture levels, air quality and forecasted weather, the forest’s window to implement these prescribed burns is Sept. 16 to Nov. 30.

The SFNF will issue additional notifications about each project based on fire managers’ expectations for implementation. Read More

Santa Fe National Forest: More Abandoned Campfires – Some Campers Still Don’t Get It

SANTA FE – Although the forest-wide numbers have improved over the summer season, fire staff on the Jemez Ranger District of the Santa Fe National Forest (SFNF) found at least a dozen abandoned campfires over the Labor Day weekend, bringing the year’s total for that one district alone to a whopping 164 abandoned campfires.

“And that’s 164 unnecessary opportunities for a wildfire to get out of control and threaten firefighter and public safety,” Jemez District Ranger Brian Riley said. “Someone’s carelessness puts lives, property and natural resources at unnecessary risk.”

Santa Fe Watershed Burn Planned For Mid-September To Restore Forest Health, Reduce Risk Of Wildfire

SANTA FE ― Fire managers on the Santa Fe National Forest (SFNF) plan to take advantage of favorable conditions, including fuel moisture levels, air quality, wind direction and weather forecasts, to initiate a prescribed burn in the Santa Fe Municipal Watershed on the Española Ranger District as early as Monday, Sept. 16.
 
The exact date will depend on fuel conditions on site.
 
Up to 350 acres north of Nichols Reservoir near Granite Point in the lower Watershed will be treated with hand and aerial ignitions. The burn will be completed in one day.
